The Berner's Street Gallery's association with American artists would continue: in the following decade it would gain notoriety for exhibiting Whistler's 'Symphony in White, No. 1'. The Cosmopolitan Art Journal for June 1859 contains a reference to 'Mr. Henry Turner, a promising Virginia artist' studying at Düsseldorf. There is another reference, in Mary Elizabeth Hite's memoir 'My Rappahannock Story Book' (1950), to 'Mr. Henry Turner, artist, and member of a fine old family, [who] had returned from Germany where he had gone to study.'.

Designed to show off the firm's capabilities, and printed on one side in purple, green, light brown and gold, with fancy lettering within florally-decorated body and border, around a small central illustration of three men working a press. Printers' details in small letters at foot, reading 'F. Bentley & Co. Lth' and 'Shoe Lane, London.' The almanac on the reverse is a more restrained affair, stylishly printed in purple and gold. Fair: lightly-aged, with small closed hole to one corner, and slight wear at foot of almanac. Central image clear and undamaged. Harrild was uncle of the novelist Richard Jefferies. The silk tie is missing consequently the front board is slightly sprung, light foxing to the early and last end papers and in Very Good clean and sound condition. Heavy volume. Walter Tyndale was one of the first illustrators to benefit from new developments in colour printing in the early 20th century, which led to a surge in demand for illustrations for travel books. He wrote and illustrated several volumes as well as providing pictures for other authors. His first commission was from Methuen for 'The New Forest' (1904), and work on subsequent books led to him travelling extensively in England, Italy, North Africa, the Middle East and Japan, painting landscapes, street scenes and architecture. Who was godfather to Grafton Street, that short byway of London which from many associations is like to outlive by far any intimate knowledge of its builder? | It is a pretty irony that though there have been Dukes of Grafton not less eminent than amiable, and the street is populous with both the shades and the living forms of men vitally connected with the arts, the man who lives thus in bricks and mortar was called "Booby Grafton", and it was said that "as to books, he was totally illiterate." And he certainly did not buy that patch of land just west of Bond Street in order to make it a mart of books and pictures and fine jewels. He bought it, this second Duke of the title, "for gardening," which the greatest book in the world records as man's oldest trade.' The article concludes: 'Perhaps books are the best way to come by a knowledge and love of London. And Grafton Street, with its links, Bond Street, Dover Street, Albemarle Street, knows a great deal about Books.' The first typescript follows the manuscript in the use of the word 'like' in the first paragraph, although amending this in pencil to 'likely'; in the second typescript, which is more attractively laid out, the word is given as 'likely', suggesting that it is of later production. While there is no record of the publication of this essay, it is likely to have been published: Darton's voluminous literary output, as his entry in the Oxford DNB indicates, included contributions to the Daily News.
