Autograph letter signed to Mrs Pepys Cockerell following the sudden death of her husband Frederick. 14, Cavendish Place. November 21st, 1878. Single sheet folded, approximately 180 x 115 mm. Four pages written in a clear hand on printed 14 Cavendish…Place, Cavendish Square headed paper, dated 21 November 1878. Old horizontal and vertical folds, a little light marking, along with mounting residue to the final side, otherwise very good. Written just weeks after the unexpected death in Paris of the architect Frederick Pepys Cockerell (1833-1878). George Edmund Street, one of the leading figures of the Victorian Gothic Revival and architect of the Royal Courts of Justice, offers heartfelt condolences to Cockerell's widow, and gives his admiration for her husband's character and professional abilities. Street then records: "Perhaps I was the last or at any rate nearly the last English architect who has seen him. I spent a short time with him at the Exhibition on October 28th.", recalling that his conversation on the artistic objects before them remained full of his "usual knowledge & taste".
