His Private Library Was Probably The Largest Private Library In The City, And Distinctively Rich In History, Philosophy, Science And The Classics. Gluck Corresponded With Many Authors, Including Mark Twain, From Whom He Obtained The Original Manuscript Of "Huckleberry Finn", The Second Half Of Which Was Presumed Lost But Discovered 100 Years Later By One Of His Granddaughters In Their Attic.

No dust jacket. James Nelson Fraser [1869-1918] served in the Indian Education Department and was Principal of the Training College in Bombay for Teachers in Secondary Schools. He was joint author of THE POEMS OF TUKARAM and he wrote about 80 pages of the present work, which James Fairbrother Edwards [b. 1875] incorporated in this work which he finished. This work is a biography of the Maratha Poet-Saint, Tukaram. The Foreword by Narayan G. Chandavakar is, as Edwards suggests, "a worthy contribution to English-Marathy literture" in its own right. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. The illustrations include the famous portrait of Viceroy Muhammad Ali, after Forbin's 1818 drawing published in Mengin's "Histoire de l'Egypte". The map of Persia (bound head-over-heels) includes the northern coastline of the Arabian Peninsula, showing Bahrein and the Great Pearl Bank. - Some maps rather wrinkled. Occasional foxing due to paper, binding slightly bumped at extremeties, but well-preserved on the whole.
