The chronological range is from the earliest period to about the 7th century AD. This is the second volume of a work that was expected to be completed in six volumes; and covers Athens. It provides a complete conspectus of evidence for every identifiable resident of Athens in antiquity, except for foreigners whose ethnic is known. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top corners and bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. Zustand: Gut. 510 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover rubbed and slightly bumped, otherwise very good and clean. - This book provides a complete conspectus of evidence for every identifiable resident of Athens in antiquity, except for foreigners whose ethnic is known. It thus serves both as a prosopography and an onomasticon. In the former capacity, it is the successor to the distinguished Prosopographia Attica of J. Kirchner, published in 1903; in the latter it provides the Athenian contribution to the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names series, edited by P. M. Fraser and E. Matthews. The evidence for the denizens of Athens in antiquity is substantially epigraphical in nature and most of the references in this work are to inscriptions. This is particularly so for the Hellenistic and Roman periods, when the literary sources all but fail. Since Kirchner completed his magisterial work, excavations, especially in the Athenian agora, have brought to life a massive treasure trove of onomastic inscriptions. This volume incorporates the evidence from these new discoveries, brings up to date the now antiquated forms of references which render Kirchners work so hard to use, and also includes the evidence from the Imperial period. This volume will serve as an invaluable tool for scholars of ancient history and epigraphy, bringing together for the first time in ninety years the evidence for every individual of ancient Athens who is known by name from the early Classical to the Late Roman period. - M, J. Osborne is Emeritus Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Melbourne and Vice Chancellor of LaTrobe University. S. G. Byrne is a graduate research assistant at LaTrobe University.
