The evidence for the denizens of Athens in antiquity is substantially epigraphical in nature and most of the references in this work are to inscriptions. This is particularly so for the Hellenistic and Roman periods, when the literary sources all but fail. Since Kirchner completed his magisterial work, excavations, especially in the Athenian agora, have brought to life a massive treasure trove of onomastic inscriptions. This volume incorporates the evidence from these new discoveries, brings up to date the now antiquated forms of references which render Kirchners work so hard to use, and also includes the evidence from the Imperial period.
