An inscription in ink on the colophon states that this copy is "one of two printer's copies in a trial binding that was not used for the edition." This interesting book explores the famous feud between C.H. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker over the ownership of the type of the renowned Doves Press. It offers a new perspective through the discovery by Michael Hornby, son of St John Hornby, of previously unknown correspondence between Cobden-Sanderson and St John Hornby, Sidney Cockerell, and Walker. The letters, mostly dated from 1906 to 1908, shed new light upon the controversy and provide fresh insight into the intensity of Cobden-Sanderson's preoccupation with the type. The unsigned inscription on the colophon was possibly written by Henry Morris, founder of the Bird & Bull Press. Morris founded his press in 1958 and continued to print their highly regarded letterpress books until his retirement in 2014. From Princeton University ".Morris's publishing program has been a boon to the historian of the book. He is correct when he writes, 'It pleases me to know that without the Bird & Bull, many books on worthwhile, albeit esoteric subjects would probably never have been published.' And all these works have been printed by letterpress from metal type on either Henry's own handmade or on imported mould-made papers." The inscription is written to Abe Lerner and Kit Currie "on the occasion of their visit here on Oct. 8/1983." Abe Lerner and his wife, Kit Currie, were both important figures in the world of books in the twentieth century. Abe Lerner (1908-2002) was a highly respected and talented typographer/book designer with links to the likes of the great Bruce Rogers. With a meticulous eye for detail and clean design, he was constantly working on new projects. With a career that landed him as the Director of Design and Production at Macmillan, President of the Typophiles, and lecturer at the Grolier Club in New York, Abe Lerner was certainly one of the finest typographic designers of the 20th century. Kit Currie began her career in the antiquarian book trade as the personal assistant for London bookdealer Bertram Rota. She moved to California in 1964 and began working at Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles, where she stayed for 14 years. She moved to New York City in 1977 with her husband, noted typographer and graphic designer Abe Lerner. Unable to find work initially, Currie ventured to start her own bookselling business, and issued her first and only catalog in the winter of 1977-1978. Soon afterward, however, she was offered a position with H. P. Kraus. Bound in brown paper covered boards with brown cloth spine. Title debossed in blind to front cover. Minimal wear to corners. This title was printed in celebration of the three-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin. The work was more commonly known as the Autobiography, but it was published here under the title Franklin himself used in referring to his manuscript. Unpublished at the time of his death, it has since become the most widely read memoir of all time. The prospectus continues to describe the mysterious path of the memoirs. considered lost for several decades after Franklin's death, and not published from his original manuscript until it was discovered by John Bigelow, the American minister to France in that country in 1867. Despite his many achievements during his illustrious life, Franklin asked to be remembered as a printer. The inscription he wrote for his tombstone reads: "B. Franklin, Printer." He believed in the trade of printing as indispensable to the spread of knowledge and self-governance. It seemed fitting to the Arion Press proprietor, Andrew Hoyem, that an American printer celebrates the three hundredth anniversary of Franklin's birth with a new design and printing of the Memoirs. The Arion Press opted for a straightforward typographic presentation of Franklin's text without introduction, illustrations, or notes. However, the Press made its own distinctive contribution to the history of printing in the United States. Hoyem took advantage of 21st century technologies to revive what is believed the first type family cut and cast in America in 1800. The type was used by Jane Aitken, daughter of Robert Aitken, the famous printer of the American revolution, for the first printing of the first American translation of the Bible in 1808. Bound in full brown goatskin, with titling on the spine and an oval silhouette of Franklin in profile stamped in gold, adapted from a postage stamp. Printed on Somerset Book, an English mouldmade paper. There is a frontispiece portrait of Franklin, taken from the one-hundred dollar bill. An unusual first edition [and first state, including p25 mispaginated as p52] "was the last collection of Franklin's writings to appear in his lifetime" [Bloom, Benjamin Franklin, 92]. The collection spans his philosophical, scientific, and political interests and, notably, includes what is arguably the first map of the Gulf Stream. There was, it appears, a second volume planned yet never published. The collection was edited by Edward Bancroft, a close friend of Franklin's and a notorious English spy. In September 1786, he contacted Franklin to report "that the London publisher Charles Dilly was planning a new edition of Franklin's works, [and] asked Franklin to send him biographical information for the introduction. On 26 November Franklin cordially responded. He liked the idea of a new edition of his works. As things turned out, the aging, easily exhausted Franklin never sent the requested information. Nonetheless, Bancroft persevered with the project and in 1787 issued Philosophical and Miscellaneous Papers" [Schaeper, Edward Bancroft, 245-6]. The collection contains three major scientific writings: Description of a New Stove for the Burning of Pitcoal (1785), Letter from Dr. B. Franklin to Dr. Ingenhausz [On the Causes and Cure of Smoky Chimneys] (1785), and Letter from Dr. Benjamin Franklin, to Mr. Alphonsus le Roy . containing Sundry Maritime Observations (1785). In this letter Franklin merged his scientific and political interests leveraging his study of the sea and Gulf Stream to "proclaim the virtues of his nation and its people." This led others to "think of the Gulf Stream in political terms. In 1790 Tom Paine declared the French Revolution 'as fixed as the Gulf Stream.' Jonathan Williams claimed the current's waters were as distinct as 'the colors of red, white and blue'" (Chaplin, 320-25). In the late 1760s, Franklin had charted what is considered the earliest depiction of the Gulf Stream, based on the records and lore of Nantucket whalers. The fold-out map included here is based on this earlier work. Finally, his "Meteorological Conjectures, &c" embodies his early observations and predictions about weather patterns, including his understanding of storm movement and the potential for predicting storm paths. Other papers include "Information to those who would remove to America," (1784) [notable as "one of the clearest expressions of his belief that American society should be based on the virtues of the middle. classes" (Isaacson, 423)], "Internal State of America," "Criminal Laws and the Practice of Privateering," and the unfortunate "Remarks concerning the Savages in North America" (1784). This copy is at once impaired, enhanced, and unique. Originally issued in marbled boards with a leather spine, a sheet of the original marbled paper is bound in at the rear. There are four plates laid in: The original fold-out 'Chart of the Gulf Stream," and the maritime fold-out intended to face p95. The first section of Plate 2 is present. Additionally, the Chart of the Gulf Stream and Plates 1 and 2 are laid in as facsimile. Finally, all three of the facsimile sheets are present unfolded in an accompanying portfolio along with a letter from the then owner "Dr. Wm. H. Press, Member, National Academy of Sciences, &c. &c., and Daughter." (this final sheet also includes a colophon addressing the modern print elements, dated 2012 and signed by the Daughter (and book artist) Sara Press. Sara was commissioned by her father, noted scientist W. H. Press to restore a first-edition copy of Franklin's book. They agreed that in doing so, she would recreate the 3 missing plates using letterpress, but would "add tiny, forged, anachronistic details suggested by the contemporary polymath in an imagined conversation with his predecessor". This printing of the 1933 Inaugural Address followed a presentation edition of 10 copies, bound in full calfskin, for the persaonal use of FDR (Halter T-546) and a second publication of 30 copies from The Harbor Press (Halter T-548). No copies of the full calfskin edition have appeared on the market since publication. Upon receipt of the books, President Roosevelt wrote to The Harbor Press noting: "This volume reflects high credit upon the producers. The quality of this publication, both from the standpoint of binding and typography, is outstanding. I shall treasure it." From Halter: The Harbor Press edition of FDR's First Inaugural was taken from a stenographic transcript and thus incorporated the many last-minute changes Roosevelt made to his text. It "is therefore the first appearance in book form of the First Inaugural as listeners actually heard it delivered". This is a wonderfully--if understatedly--bound copy of one of the most strictly limited Golden Cockerel Press productions. The binding is the work of J. Franklin Mowery, retired Head of Conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library and past president of the Guild of Book Workers. Mowery studied bookbinding under Professor Kurt Londenberg at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste (Academy of Art) in Hamburg, and trained as a paper conservator under Otto Wächter in Vienna, before returning to the U.S. to work at the Huntington Library. According to his article "A Binder's Training" (Guild of Book Workers' Journal XX, 1981-82), the blind-stamping technique seen here was "particularly favored by Professor Londenberg" and often employed by Mowery for the range of design possibilities it offers. The method uses dies to stamp the patterns: "a photographic process can transfer any black and white image onto zinc plates that are deeply etched and mounted onto type-high metal blocks for heated impressions or onto wood for cold embossing." Mowery stated that lines of the design here represent the driving rain of the storm that struck Jonah's ship. Founded in 1920 with the intention to print fine editions of important well-known books as well as new literary works of merit from young authors, the Golden Cockerel Press was purchased in 1924 by the illustrator and wood-engraver Robert Gibbings. "Under his direction," says Cave, the Press was "transformed into the principal vehicle for the renaissance of wood-engraved book illustration that took place in the years between the wars." In addition to doing wood engravings himself, Gibbings employed a stable of eminent artists including, among others, Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, John Nash, John Farleigh, Eric Ravilious, and David Jones. The memorable woodcuts are the work of Jones (1895-1974), who had a brief but impressive career as an illustrator before eye strain forced him to abandon engraving in 1930. In his published study of Jones' work, Douglas Cleverdon says that in the short time Jones was engraving "he produced a remarkable amount of work, of great variety; some witty, some mystical; some boldly cut, some delicately shaded; some simple to print, some virtually impossible. Although he never attained . . . the greatest technical mastery in the conventional sense, his prints are nearly always distinguished by their excellence of design, personal commitment, and absolute individuality." Our binding was commissioned by collector and self-described "radical" museum administrator Jan van der Marck (1929-2010), who championed artists that pushed boundaries--often to the consternation of the museum boards who employed him. …
