A generally VG+ clean tightly bound set of early editions with only some light wear and some neat colour touch-ups to some extremities. Volume 1 of this set has a pencil note to verso of front free endpaper to say it was previously purchased at James Bain Booksellers in 1917 for £6. Ex Lbris Oliver Brett (3rd Viscount Esher, who was a British peer and politician) with his fine engraved bookplate to each volume. Charles Lamb (1775 1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".

Publisher's full morocco, elaborately embossed with gilt titles and matching gilt devices to front and rear boards; all edges gilt; 300pp; frontispiece, engraved extra-title and 4 inserted leaves of plates; 4pp publisher's catalog bound in at end of text. Mild overall rubbing, with some softness to leather at head and heel; top edge gilt slightly oxidized; still a sound, Very Good copy in a quite lovely mid-19th c. gift binding. Early pencil gift inscription to a Mary F. Sisson, dated 1854. A religious and temperance miscellany, mostly short moral tales with a few verse works interspersed. T.S. Arthur (1809-1885) is best-remembered for his hugely popular temperance trace Ten Nights in A Bar-Room, and What I Saw There (1854), but he was an incredibly prolific writer, churning out more than 100 titles between 1840 and the early 1880s. For the current work, see WRIGHT II:150, recording one copy of an 1856 edition by the current publisher and another the same year from a Chicago publisher.

The complete collection of special Gregynog bindings owned by the late Miss Margaret Sydney Davies, who founded the famous Welsh Gregynog Press (1922-1940) with her sister Gwendoline Elizabeth. Describes most extensively, both bibliographical and historical, all forty-two Gregynog Press titles and their special bindings, which were designed by artists such as Robert Ashwin Maynard, Horace Walter Bray, Blair Hughes-Stanton, William MacCance and George Fisher.

Whitman Bennett (1884-1968) was a bookseller as well as bookbinder. - A little rubbed especially at the front hinges which are not cracked but a little weak. Else nice, clean inside, decorative.

Définition de la transaction et but. etc. Principes généraux de la procédure. - Volume 2: Exécution des jugements et actes. - This copy in elegant bindings has a small inscription by Adrien Brunck, apparently a relative of the scholar and bibliophile Richard François Philippe Brunck (1729-1803) in Strasbourg who edited several classics and acquired a beautiful large library with many important texts in elegant bindings. He was forced to sell his library but the tradition obviously survived in the family (this copy if from an auction of Brunckiana). - Little browning, minor spotting but mostly clean. A little rubbed but decorative.
