Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Rare publishers deluxe leather bindings. Reprint of the original 1886 edition, published by Ellis and Scruton. Two volumes. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.3 inches). Very good copies, the pages clean throughout and some gatherings still unopened. Finely bound, by Roger de Coverly of London, in late nineteenth century full dark blue calf in the same style as the original decorative publishers cloth binding, designed by Rossetti himself. Spines with five raised bands, the compartments lettered and decorated in gilt. Elaborate floral design to all of the boards, all in gilt. Board edges with gilt piping. Inner boards with single gilt rules lines. Original decorative floral endpapers printed in dark blue on light blue paper. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed. Some rubbing to the spines, and a little bumping to the edges but still a very attractive pair of fine leather bindings by one of the master bookbinders of the day.…

V, top edges blocked in gilt, marbled endpapers to each volume, all volumes bound in matching contemporary navy half morocco over marbled boards, gilt ruled spines in compartments with raised bands and gilt titles by Roger de Coverley & Sons (each volume with their name stamp to verso of front free endpaper). A generally VG+ clean tightly bound set of early editions with only some light wear and some neat colour touch-ups to some extremities. Volume 1 of this set has a pencil note to verso of front free endpaper to say it was previously purchased at James Bain Booksellers in 1917 for £6. Ex Lbris Oliver Brett (3rd Viscount Esher, who was a British peer and politician) with his fine engraved bookplate to each volume. Charles Lamb (1775 1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".…

Mild overall rubbing, with some softness to leather at head and heel; top edge gilt slightly oxidized; still a sound, Very Good copy in a quite lovely mid-19th c. gift binding. Early pencil gift inscription to a Mary F. Sisson, dated 1854. A religious and temperance miscellany, mostly short moral tales with a few verse works interspersed. T.S. Arthur (1809-1885) is best-remembered for his hugely popular temperance trace Ten Nights in A Bar-Room, and What I Saw There (1854), but he was an incredibly prolific writer, churning out more than 100 titles between 1840 and the early 1880s. He was forced to sell his library but the tradition obviously survived in the family (this copy if from an auction of Brunckiana). - Little browning, minor spotting but mostly clean.
