Very good copies, the pages clean throughout and some gatherings still unopened. Finely bound, by Roger de Coverly of London, in late nineteenth centu…ry full dark blue calf in the same style as the original decorative publishers cloth binding, designed by Rossetti himself. Spines with five raised bands, the compartments lettered and decorated in gilt. Elaborate floral design to all of the boards, all in gilt. Board edges with gilt piping. Inner boards with single gilt rules lines. Original decorative floral endpapers printed in dark blue on light blue paper. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed. Some rubbing to the spines, and a little bumping to the edges but still a very attractive pair of fine leather bindings by one of the master bookbinders of the day.

A generally VG+ clean tightly bound set of early editions with only some light wear and some neat colour touch-ups to some extremities. Volume 1 of this set has a pencil note to verso of front free endpaper to say it was previously purchased at James Bain Booksellers in 1917 for £6. Ex Lbris Oliver Brett (3rd Viscount Esher, who was a British peer and politician) with his fine engraved bookplate to each volume. Charles Lamb (1775 1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".

Mild overall rubbing, w…ith some softness to leather at head and heel; top edge gilt slightly oxidized; still a sound, Very Good copy in a quite lovely mid-19th c. gift binding. Early pencil gift inscription to a Mary F. Sisson, dated 1854. A religious and temperance miscellany, mostly short moral tales with a few verse works interspersed. T.S. Arthur (1809-1885) is best-remembered for his hugely popular temperance trace Ten Nights in A Bar-Room, and What I Saw There (1854), but he was an incredibly prolific writer, churning out more than 100 titles between 1840 and the early 1880s. For the current work, see WRIGHT II:150, recording one copy of an 1856 edition by the current publisher and another the same year from a Chicago publisher.

Définition de la transaction et but. etc. Principes généraux de la procédure. - Volume 2: Exécution des jugements et actes. - This copy in elegant bindings has a small inscription by Adrien Brunck, apparently a relative of the scholar and bibliophile Richard François Philippe Brunck (1729-1803) in Strasbourg who edited several classics and acquired a beautiful large library with many important texts in elegant bindings. He was forced to sell his library but the tradition obviously survived in the family (this copy if from an auction of Brunckiana). - Little browning, minor spotting but mostly clean. A little rubbed but decorative.

A very good set in the beautiful decorative Art Nouveau style red cloth bindings designed by Talwin Morris. Front boards with gilt, dark green and light green decorations. Spines… with gilt lettering and decoration plus dark and light green blocking. Rear boards decorated in white and green. Bevelled edges to all boards. Plain grey endpapers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to the edges and uniform fading to the cloth spines but the gilt and colours still strong and bright and this is a very attractive set in these beautiful bindings. --- This design, featuring attractive Glasgow Roses and Crowns, was exhibited at the influential Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna in Turin in 1902. -- More photos available on request.
