An anthology of two novellas and a short story by François-René Chateaubriand, inspired by and influencing the Romanticism of the time. An illustrated work in a half morocco binding with marbled boards. Bookplate of Sir Ronald Lindsay (1877-1945) to the front paste down. Lindsay was a British diplomat who was Ambassador to Turkey, Germany and the United States.François-René, viscount of Chateaubriand (1768-1848), was one of the most influential pre-Romanticism writers of his generation. Atala was a popular novella which reflected the 18th century French Romanticism of his time. It was first published in 1801. René, another novella, also had a great influence on early Romanticism. It was first published in 1802. Le Dernier Abencérage, or The Adventures of the Last Abencerage, was a short story first published in 1826. They are collected in this volume, written in the original French, with a facsimile letter from the author bound in with Atala; four etchings by Ricardo de Los Rios (1846-1929); and fourteen vignettes by Frédéric Régamey (1849-1925). Collated, complete. In a half morocco binding. Externally smart, though extremities and spine are lightly rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age toned but clean. Natif d'Anvers d'une famille originaire d'Espagne, Jean-François de Los Rios (1727-1820) exerça la librairie à Paris (1745), puis à Lyon (1760), où, malgré les oppositions, il fut chargé des ventes publiques de livres. Ce fut lui qui acquit la bibliothèque des Jésuites de la ville après la suppression de l'Ordre. Born in Antwerp to a family of Spanish origin, Jean-François de Los Rios (17271820) practised as a bookseller in Paris (1745), then in Lyon (1760), wheredespite oppositionhe was entrusted with the conduct of public book auctions. He was the one who purchased the Jesuit college library after the suppression of the Order. Édition originale de cette bibliographie commentée établie par le libraire Jean-François de LOS-RIOS (1727-1820) qui, chargé des ventes publiques de livres à Lyon, y a notamment acquis des bibliothèques de Jésuites (1768) qui "n'ont pas peu contribué à [lui] fournir le moyen de composer [cet] ouvrage" (in avertissement de l'auteur): 639 + 190 (en "supplément" in fine) notices portant auteur, titre, adresse, prix - et commentaire pour les 639 premières - d'ouvrages en classement systématique, précédées d'un index alphabétique des auteurs et anonymes. Uno dei più colti librai antiquari della sua epoca, Los Rios esercitò a Lione, sia come dipendente che con una sua libreria; specializzato in edizioni antiche di classici greci e latini, pubblicò cataloghi ed organizzò più di 150 vendite pubbliche, oltre a scrivere opere di bibliografia.

Anvers, 7 juillet 1761, manuscript on paper, written in ink, in-folio, (12) pp (3 blank) , written in French, neat handwriting, signed at the end in holograph by Prince de Ligne , Comte de Calesberg ( shaky signature) , Duc d'Ursel , marquis François De Los Rios , Vicomte d'Audenarde - Vicomte de Lalaing ( share holders or ''interessés ''). Written statement, original document, of the meeting organised in Antwerp on the 7th of july 1761 by Mr. D'Henssens, only director of the Compagnie d'Ostende ( co-director Meulenaer had died). The company was in liquidation since 1731 when it had to stop its activities on demand of the English in return of their acceptance of the Pragmatic Sanction of Charles VI. According this statement there was still a capital of Fl. 31463 available. Another important point was that the Austrian emperor never had paid a compensation , contrary to his promise , when he closed the company. The meeting decides that the directors must press this point. Provenance; from the archives of Charles de Proli ; photostat of a typed letter from 23 May 1945 refers to Theophile Smekens who was still occupied with Proli's bancruptcy in the late 19th c. ( see Denucé, Antwerps Archievenblad 2e reeks, 7 , 1932 nr.1). The fact that this document was in the hands of Charles Proli is a sure indication of his involvement although his name is not present here.
