The book also presents the first attempt to translate large portions of Prajnakaragupta s commentarial masterpiece, the Pramanavarttikalaṅkarabhasya. At the occasion of its second edition, the book has been supplemented with a new substantial study which addresses a remarkable theory developed by Prajnakaragupta and called the doctrine of a future cause (bhavikaranavada). This is a highly original theory of backward causation, or retrocausation, which Prajnakaragupta employs in his proof of rebirth, his explanation of the yogic perception of past and future objects, and his understanding of pervasion (vyapti) as an essential feature of inference.

This volume is the outcome of a collaboration between the European Society for the Study of Central Asian and Himalayan Civilisations (SEECHAC) and the Leipzig-based research project "Buddhist Murals of Kucha on the Northern Silk Road." The conference, with the same title as the present proceedings, was held over the course of three days in November 2021 at the Bibliotheca Albertina in Leipzig. The sixteen articles that make up the collection explore aspects of the concept of landscape in the civilisations of Central Asia and the Himalayas from the perspectives of art history, archaeology, religious studies and anthropology. As the historian Simon Schama reminds us, "landscapes are culture before they are nature; constructs of the imagination projected onto the wood and water and rock." In this volume, landscape is understood in both senses, as the external environment but also, and more often, as the culturally mediated representation of the natural world. To the extent that such creations are constructs of the imagination, the meaning of "landscape" need not be confined to the category of painting that it conventionally designates. Heavenly realms and divine interventions in this world are widely reproduced in murals, scroll paintings and architectural forms, but their depiction is often founded on textual authority, and further perpetuated in secondary writings as well as oral narratives. Most of the papers in this collection explore landscapes that are simultaneously divine and human in that they embrace the this-worldly and the beyond, an extended space of humans, animals and preternatural beings rendered on a variety of supports. The workshop was the first meeting of what we hope will be a broad consideration of communication among lymphocytes, and focused on the new interdisciplinary branch of biological sciences, immunosemiotics. It is in the realm of the possible, if not the probable, that in the future a number of scientists larger than the thirty present at 11 Ciocco will find immunosemiotics to fill a need in scientific thinking and a gap between biology and the humanities. This might lead to growth and flourishing of the branch, and in this case the first conference and this first book could be blessed by the impalpable qual ity of becoming 'historical', if in an admittedly 1 imited sense. Just in case this should happen the organizers/editors think it wise to set the record straight at this particular time, about the sequen~e of events and circumstances that crystallized the archeology of the '11 Liocco' gathering.
