Emil Sigmund Fischer (1865-1945), banker and traveler, born in Vienna. He came to China in 1894 and was a banker in Shanghai, later in Tienstin. Beside "Guide to Peking" he wrote "Travels in China, 1894-1940" (Tienstin, 1941); "Through the Silk and Tea Districts of Kiang-nan and Chekiang"; "The Trans-Siberian Route" and others. He was held prisoner by the Japanese from 1941 until his death. With contemporary ticket to first paste-down, in English and Chinese, "French Bookstore, Peiping (China)". He travelled widely in China and later moved to Tientsin. Wu Tai Shan is a sacred mountain in Shanxi province, which was once home to over three hundred temples, a number that has diminished to around thirty. It is believed to be of ancient origin and is thought of as the first of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism.…
