And Talbot's prophecy in The Pencil of Nature, of photography's future in the reproduction of art had been confirmed in the same way. That the value of photographs as reference in the history and practice of art was recognised in the nineteenth century, needs little support, whereas the importance of Italy in the history and practice made the position of the Alinari a favourable one.
