Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. DOSTOYEVSKY, Fyodor. Le Crime et le Châtiment. Paris: E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie, 1885. FIRST FRENCH EDITION. Two volumes. Finely bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, the spines gilt-lettered and ruled. Bindings firm and sound, with expected rubbing to extremities. Top edges retaining the publisher's original red tint; fore and bottom edges deckled. Interiors clean and well preserved with light, even toning; occasional faint contemporary marginal markings. Dostoevsky's most celebrated novel, translated by Victor Derély, representing one of the earliest major Western European appearances of the work and a key moment in the international reception of Russian literature. Dostoevsky wrote Crime and Punishment during a period of severe financial crisis, gambling debts, and emotional instability, while living partly abroad and under pressure from creditors. Dostoevsky drew upon his own experiences with imprisonment and psychological suffering. Earlier in life he had been arrested for political activity, sentenced to death, and taken before a firing squad before receiving a last-minute reprieve and years of Siberian exile, an experience that profoundly shaped the novel's themes of guilt, punishment, confession, and spiritual redemption. French translations of Crime and Punishment played a major role in Dostoevsky's international reception. Before many English readers encountered him widely, French editions introduced Dostoevsky to Western European intellectual circles and established his reputation outside Russia. Nietzsche famously called Dostoevsky "the only psychologist from whom I had anything to learn," while Freud later regarded the novel as one of the great explorations of criminal psychology. The work was controversial for its intense psychological and moral themes, yet by the late nineteenth century it had become central to European discussions of morality, nihilism, radical politics, and modern alienation, establishing psychological realism in European fiction and strongly influenced later writers. An attractive and historically significant early continental appearance of Crime and Punishment, illustrating the rapid transmission of Dostoevsky's work beyond Russia. Additional photographs are available on request and will be provided with pleasure. The volumes will be carefully wrapped and securely boxed for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. [Attributes: First French Edition; Hard Cover].

Russian-language collected works edition. Volume I of Dostoevsky's collected writings, containing short stories and tales issued by the noted St. Petersburg publisher A. F. Marks. Octavo (8vo). Russian text. Portrait frontispiece of Dostoevsky with tissue guard. Original publisher's cloth-backed boards. Originally published as a literary supplement to the influential Russian journal Niva. Contents generally clean with age toning and scattered foxing, most noticeably to the portrait frontispiece. Ownership and institutional markings confined primarily to the endpapers and preliminary leaves. Binding remains sound and firm. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. DOSTOYEVSKY, Fyodor. Der Idiot [The Idiot]. Leipzig: Insel Verlag, n.d. [c. 1920]. An early Insel-Verlag edition. Octavo (8 vo). 375, 432, 323 pp. + adverts in two volumes. Three volumes, complete. Original red cloth, with the gilt Insel ship device to front boards and gilt lettering to the spine. Top edges tinted, with the remaining edges deckled. Contents are clean and fresh, with several leaves remaining unopened, indicating minimal handling since publication. Bindings are sound and square. The volumes are well preserved, with bright cloth and strong gilt. Each volume retains its original dust jacket; while the jacket spines are lacking, the front and rear panels and flaps remain intact, a notably uncommon survival for German dust jackets of this period. The consistent condition across the set suggests early protection, likely within the publisher's original slipcase, now absent. Issued as part of Insel's distinguished Roman series, this Insel-Verlag set, represents an important stage in the early twentieth-century German reception of Dostoevsky. The combination of uniform volumes, strong decorative cloth, and surviving dust jackets makes this an especially appealing example for collectors of German literary editions and Russian literature. DOSTOJEWSKI, Fjodor. Der Idiot. Leipzig: Insel Verlag, o. J. [ca. 1920]. Eine frühe Ausgabe des Insel-Verlags. Oktav (8vo). 375, 432, 323 Seiten + Verlagsanzeigen in zwei Bänden. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Books will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available.
