Collector's Note: Edited by Grant Overton, The World's 100 Best Short Stories was conceived in the 1920s as a definitive anthology of modern short fiction, drawing together landmark works by leading British, American, and European authors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Issued by Funk & Wagnalls as a uniform ten-volume set, the series reflects early twentieth-century efforts to canonize the short story as a serious literary form. Thematically arranged volumes?ranging from Adventure and Romance to Ghosts and Humor?offer a broad survey of narrative styles, international voices, and literary movements of the period. Complete sets in original cloth remain increasingly difficult to assemble and are valued both for their literary scope and for their place in the history of anthology publishing. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Fyodor Dostoevsky. The Idiot: A Novel in Four Parts. Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1920. Reprint of the First American Edition (1913). Octavo. Publisher's original blue-grey linen cloth, gilt lettering and gilt block to spine. Binding sound. Light shelf wear to crown and heel of spine with mild sun fading to spine; corners gently bumped. Lacking dust jacket. Internally Very Good+: clean, bright, and unmarked pages. 620 pages. Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay & Sons, Ltd., Suffolk. One gathering (pp. 529-536) remains entirely unopened along the top margin, an increasingly uncommon survival feature indicating minimal prior handling. The folded sheets were never trimmed by the binder; the triangular folds visible are original to manufacture and not post-publication defects. A small number of leaves show subtle production creasing from the original folding of the signature, a normal manufacturing artifact that does not affect the integrity of the binding or readability of the text. Collector's Note: Constance Garnett's translations were the first to introduce Dostoevsky to the English-speaking world and remain central to his early reception in the West. Macmillan's early twentieth-century editions, particularly those printed by Richard Clay & Sons, are valued for their durable cloth bindings and clear typography. Copies retaining unopened gatherings are increasingly uncommon and are often regarded as evidence of minimal prior handling. This volume represents a sound and well-preserved early Macmillan example of one of Dostoevsky's most enduring novels. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Book will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit. [Attributes: Hard Cover; Early English Translation; Unopened Pages.].

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. DOSTOYEVSKY, Fyodor. Le Crime et le Châtiment. Paris: E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie, 1885. FIRST FRENCH EDITION. Two volumes. Finely bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, the spines gilt-lettered and ruled. Bindings firm and sound, with expected rubbing to extremities. Top edges retaining the publisher's original red tint; fore and bottom edges deckled. Interiors clean and well preserved with light, even toning; occasional faint contemporary marginal markings. Dostoevsky's most celebrated novel, translated by Victor Derély, representing one of the earliest major Western European appearances of the work and a key moment in the international reception of Russian literature. Dostoevsky wrote Crime and Punishment during a period of severe financial crisis, gambling debts, and emotional instability, while living partly abroad and under pressure from creditors. Dostoevsky drew upon his own experiences with imprisonment and psychological suffering. Earlier in life he had been arrested for political activity, sentenced to death, and taken before a firing squad before receiving a last-minute reprieve and years of Siberian exile, an experience that profoundly shaped the novel's themes of guilt, punishment, confession, and spiritual redemption. French translations of Crime and Punishment played a major role in Dostoevsky's international reception. Before many English readers encountered him widely, French editions introduced Dostoevsky to Western European intellectual circles and established his reputation outside Russia. Nietzsche famously called Dostoevsky "the only psychologist from whom I had anything to learn," while Freud later regarded the novel as one of the great explorations of criminal psychology. The work was controversial for its intense psychological and moral themes, yet by the late nineteenth century it had become central to European discussions of morality, nihilism, radical politics, and modern alienation, establishing psychological realism in European fiction and strongly influenced later writers. An attractive and historically significant early continental appearance of Crime and Punishment, illustrating the rapid transmission of Dostoevsky's work beyond Russia. Additional photographs are available on request and will be provided with pleasure. The volumes will be carefully wrapped and securely boxed for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. [Attributes: First French Edition; Hard Cover].
