Evenly toned, slight creasing, small chips on the margins, with no loss of text. Rare. $1,650. * Shaw and Tomlinson appeared to have murdered in fits of rage sparked by disputes over money. In both cases witnesses were called to prove insanity. Smith, who may have been suffering from post-partum depression, threw her twelve-day-old baby into a canal. [London]: Birt, Printer, 1825. 9-1/2" x 7-1/2" (24.3 x 19.2 cm) broadside, edges untrimmed, mounted to later 10" x 8" (25.7 x 20.2 cm) backing sheet. Text in double columns separated by thin rule below headline. Negligible light soiling, a few tiny holes (no loss to text), small spots of adhesive or residue to verso. Rare. $1,250. * This broadside records the outcome of a Privy Council meeting to discuss the fates of fourteen prisoners held at Newgate under sentence of death after their conviction at the Old Bailey October sessions in 1825. "His Majesty was graciously pleased to respite" eleven of the prisoners, including two teenage girls convicted of housebreaking and a gang of seven convicted of larceny. Our broadside is careful to note the duration of the meeting ("upwards of an hour and a half"), reflecting the important optics of the prerogative of mercy in the age of the Bloody Code. William Henry Austin, a postal employee who stole a letter, John Edmunds, convicted of horse theft, and Richard William Jasper, who forged a bill of exchange, were not so lucky. All three were hanged on December 27, 1825. A seven-stanza ballad of typically dubious quality commemorates their sentence. This broadside appears to be unrecorded. Williams, Thomas [d.1831]. May, [James]. Trial, Execution, And Confession of the Burkers, On Monday, December 5th, 1831 for the Murder of Charles Fariere, An Italian Boy. Light browning, minor edgewear, a few faint stains, horizontal and vertical fold lines with slight creasing along them, clean tear to central horizontal fold affecting text without loss to legibility. $1,750. * Known as the "London Burkers," John Bishop, Thomas Williams, and James May were "resurrection men" whose grim trade directly mirrored the murderous exploits of Edinburgh's William Burke and William Hare. Rather than relying solely on grave robbing, the trio began luring vulnerable individuals to their home, where they were drugged and drowned to preserve the corpses for anatomical sale. Their enterprise collapsed in early November 1831 following the "Italian Boy Murder"-so named because the victim was mistakenly believed to be a missing Italian street musician. When the suspects attempted to sell the remarkably fresh corpse to King's College, an astute anatomist noticed the lack of burial soil and suspicious trauma, promptly alerting the authorities. The subsequent investigation uncovered evidence of multiple murders, culminating in a sensational trial. On December 3, 1831, all three were convicted; Bishop and Williams were hanged two days later before a crowd of thousands, while May's sentence was commuted to transportation to Van Diemen's Land. This highly sensational broadside reflects the intense public fascination and moral panic surrounding the case. Printed immediately following the executions, the text assumes a contemporary readership already intimately familiar with the gruesome details. It provides a vivid contemporary account of the trial and final executions, augmented by a poignant, purported farewell letter from Williams to his wife, and concludes with seven stanzas of moralizing cautionary verse.
