"the exclusive right to manufacture Laundry Soap from [the Michaud Fils Freres] formulas," and further information about the advertising plan. This company not represented in Romaine. Hyde & Co., 61 Fleet Street, [c. 1816]. Broadside, 280 × 380 mm, printed within a decorative border, set in tabular form. Old folds, small tear to lower margin, light toning and handling, but a good example. A statistical broadside comparing Britain's major wars from the Revolution of 1688 through the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, listing for each conflict the duration, enemies and allies, principal battles, peace settlements, and, most strikingly, the sums raised by taxation and loans, total expenditure, average annual cost, and the growth of the national debt. The concluding text argues that 'the system of loans has reached its height' and questions whether the nation can again sustain war under the existing financial order. Issued shortly after Waterloo, and here in a fifth edition, when the burden of war finance, high taxation, and the funded debt were matters of intense public controversy.…

Zustand: Very good. - A superb 11 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide color woodcut on a 21-1/4 inch high by 15-3/4 inch wide sheet of fine creamy paper. The image depicts Tony Weller, the father of Sam Weller who works for Mr. Pickwick in Dicken's "Pickwick Papers". A large fat man, Tony Weller is a coachman here attired in 18th or early 19th century garb, with a long open black coat exposing a wool scarf over a checkered shirt and tight pants over which are drawn black turned-down boots. A black hat adorns his jolly-looking coachman's head and a thin long-stemmed pipe with a diminutive bowl nearly disappears in his extended large beefy hand. The image is very much reminiscent of 19th-century caricature. Signed and dated in pencil by the artist under the image at right: "Philip Reed 1936". Brown paper tape is mounted from the verso along the top edge of the print and there is a tiny tear to the left edge near the top, all of which can be easily matted out. A very attractive broadside print.…

Large, engraved broadside (approx. 750 × 500 mm), printed in columns beneath a central architectural wood-engraving of Mr Barry's plan for the intended new Houses of Parliament; letterpress text and statistical tables giving the extent, population, and value of land by county in England and Wales. Folded, with short splits at old folds, small central holes and light marginal stains, toned; a well-preserved example of a large-format ephemeral print. Overall, about very good. A striking statistical and architectural broadside, presenting a snapshot of England and Wales at the opening of the Victorian era. The imposing central image shows Charles Barry's design for the new Palace of Westminster—then still under construction following the 1834 fire—depicted from the Thames. The illustration predates completion of the building and gives an imagining of how it would be perceived. The tables compile data on acreage, population, land value, and taxation by county, derived from the 1841 census and parliamentary returns. Such "statistical broadsides" were a popular mid-nineteenth-century phenomenon: large decorative sheets designed to display at a glance the productivity and prosperity of the nation. Combining graphic design with civic education, they embodied the Victorian interest in measurement, industry, and reform. Printed by A. Fullarton & Co., whose large-scale reference works (including the Parliamentary Gazetteer of England and Wales, 1840-43) pioneered the integration of maps, diagrams, and statistical data, England at One View is a rare example of this short-lived genre of informational art. An example is held in the British Library; another recorded at the London Metropolitan Archives. …

A contemporary news broadside announcing the renewed bombardment of Sebastopol. Nottingham: Printed and Published by Thomas Stevenson, Wheeler-Gate, [17 April 1855 or shortly thereafter]. Broadside printed on one side of a single thin sheet, 380 x 250 mm, the headline "BOMBARDMENT!!" printed in exceptionally large heavy type above three columns of text. Creased and crumpled, with edge wear, several short marginal tears and light repairs to the reverse along the upper edge. Some toning and surface marking, but substantially complete, fully legible and remarkably well preserved for an ephemeral broadside printed on extremely fragile paper. Good. A dramatic provincial news broadside issued during the Siege of Sebastopol, announcing the renewed Allied bombardment of the Russian fortress during the Crimean War. The enormous headline occupies almost the full width of the sheet and was designed to attract attention when displayed in the street. The principal report, headed "Progress of the Siege", is dated from before Sebastopol on 31 March and describes the Allied trenches, batteries and preparations for reopening fire against the Russian positions. It records the construction of Russian redoubts, the strengthening of works around the Mamelon and Round Tower, the use of heavy guns and shells, and the expectation that the British and French batteries would shortly commence a coordinated bombardment. A further section, "The Bombardment of Sebastopol", announces that firing had begun on the evening of 9 April and had continued for twelve hours. This refers to the second major Allied bombardment of Sebastopol, launched in April 1855 after the severe Crimean winter and intended to weaken the Russian defences before a renewed assault. The broadside can be dated closely from its final column, which reports the arrival at Windsor of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie on Monday 16 April 1855. Their state visit was an important public demonstration of the Anglo-French alliance while the two nations fought together in the Crimea. The sheet must therefore have been printed on 17 April 1855 or within the following few days, combining the latest military intelligence with news of the French imperial visit. Printed by Thomas Stevenson of Wheeler-Gate, Nottingham. Such cheaply produced sheets were intended for immediate circulation and display rather than preservation, and their thin paper and temporary purpose ensured a very low survival rate.…
