This is an M1 Abrams Tank Simulation. Spectrum HoloByte, Inc. was a video game developer and publisher. The company, founded in 1983 in Boulder, Colorado… by Jeff Sauter, Phil Adam and Mike Franklin, was best known for its simulation games, notably the Falcon series of combat flight simulators, and for publishing the first version of Tetris outside the Soviet Union (in 1987, for MS-DOS). Spectrum HoloByte also published games for various home computers and video game consoles. The chairman of Spectrum HoloByte, Gilman Louie, also founded Nexa Corporation, a developer of entertainment software, which went on to merge with Spectrum HoloByte and company President Phil Adam prior to the company's move from Colorado to California. In 1992, HoloByte received an investment from Kleiner Perkins, which let the company repurchase shares formerly owned by Robert Maxwell's companies, ending its ties to their bankruptcies. In December 1993, Spectrum HoloByte merged with MicroProse to form MicroProse Inc. For the following years, games from both companies were published under their respective brands, but in 1996 all titles were consolidated under the MicroProse brand. Hasbro Interactive acquired the merged company in 1998, and what had been Spectrum HoloByte ceased to exist when the development studio in Alameda, California was closed in 1999. Tank [tm] is a realistic military simulation of modern land combat. The program is based on a real military simulation network system used by the United States Army for training at Fort Knox. Folio, 11 pp. On the rectos of eleven leaves of Britannia paper watermarked 'W H FELLOWS | 1841'. Held together with string. Text clear and complete. In ink, with deletions and emendations in pencil. Good, on aged paper. Docketed on reverse of last leaf. The subject of the poem is the execution of Conradine in the market square…in Naples, 29 October 1268. The first section (3 pp) begins 'Italia fair Italia unto thee, | Was beauty given twice with misery, | At once the loveliest and the loveliest clime, | Thou wert the seat of Empire, and of crime; [.]'. An alternative to the last line has been written in, and deleted: 'Thy charms were only equalled by thy crime'. The second section (4 pp, originally titled 'The Morning immediately before the Execution') begins At that sweet hour when twilight into day, | Dips her dark wing, and mistlike fades away, [.]'. It contains another poem (deleted by the author), entitled 'Good Bye & Farewell', beginning 'The thrilling whisper of "Good Bye", | Thou not unmix'd with pain, | Seems to anticipate the joy, | Of meeting once again.' The third section (4 pp) begins 'Close to the castle walls, and just beneath, | A solemn scaffold rear'd its form of death, | While close around a dense and bristling mass, | Of soldiers, occupied the meanest place; [.]'. The author is not named. It may be a coincidence, but a review of M. E. Jeffreys 'Hoel the Hostage and other Poems' in the Metropolitan Magazine for June 1842 mentions that the volume contains a poem by this title, one of a number of historical narratives, 'replete with animation and descriptive spirit'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. On paper watermarked 'J GREEN & SON'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with slight loss at the spine.From the Harington family papers, the author's identity being established from other items. Clearly a youthful production, and either written during Harington's time at Eton in the 1870s, or Christ… Church, Oxford, in the 1880s. Written employing the long s. The 140 lines of verse are numerated by the author, and a catch-word at the end suggests that more followed or the poet's invention failed him. Three illustrations in pencil are on the middle two pages: one of the hangman, another of the woman in Victorian clothing fallen to the floor, and the last of her lying inside her coffin. A fourth pencil illustration on the last page, depicting the dead woman on the ground, written over by the text. As often with Victorian writing on the subject, the writing is charged with a certain erotic undertone. Public execution was of course the staple of Victorian street ballads, but it is unusual to find such a production by a member of the upper classes. The 'fragment' begins: 'Thus she, though free from guilt & fair & young | Goes, a convicted felon, to be hung | Her pinioned elbows bound behind her back | And bared, all ready for the rope, her neck | They help her mount the cart & her they bid | To seat herself upon the coffin lid'. The execution is described as follows: 'The cart moves on: the rope about her neck | Drawn tighter still & drags her helpless back | Forced o'er the edge at last it holds her there | To swing & twist, & dangle in the air | As her full weight bears on the slipping knot | Begins a strangling pressure round her throat | Without, - the halter gulls her tender skin | Her windpipe chokes, & checks her breath within | She tries to scream for mercy, but in vain | No sound shall issue from those lips again | But silent movements only testify | How long the struggling body takes to die | Striving in vain the pinioned arms to loose | Could she but reach the ever tightening noose | Relax a little of it's [sic] choking strain | Pull off the stifling cap & breathe again.' Further on is another suggestive couplet: 'So ask not we if she or cares or notes | What passes 'neath those dangling petticoats.' The last four lines read: 'With heavy thud she fills her narrow bed | And on its flannell pillow rests her head | To quit it once but only to assume | Washed & laid out the garments of the tomb'. Beneath the last line is the catch-word 'There'.

Solid text block. From a…limited edition of 3000 copies, this being number 237, numbered on the title page with a rubber stamp. This copy is signed by the author on his frontispiece portrait. Shortly after the death of President John F. Kennedy, President Johnson asked Chief Justice Earl Warren to head a presidential commission investigating the assassination of the president. What was formally known as the President's Commission quickly became known as the Warren Commission. The committee members were a bipartisan group from different government agencies, meant to avoid any appearance of a cover-up. The commission served from December 1963 until October 1964, concluding with the publication of the Warren Commission Report. Judge Warren advocated for more transparency in the final analysis but was rebuffed due to ongoing secret government actions. As a result, the lone gunman conclusion of the Warren Commission report was met with public skepticism, including from the author of this work. Described like this in the British Museum catalogue: "The hangman stands before the table dragging at a rope round the neck of a bust of Wellington (left) which he is about to pull from its pedestal. A scour…ge projects from his coat-pocket, and he says: 'This is a better job than a hanging match - double fees for this, I shall have the head dissected'. Just behind him (right) stands the Mayor Key, flanked by Aldermen Wood and Waithman, both holding up their hats! The Mayor, with a sly complacent smile, looks down, saying, 'He has forfeited all claims to honor and consistency, and shall no longer disgrace this place'. Wood:' Down with him; off with him'. Waithman: 'Hangman do your duty, as I hope every Englishman will'. Behind these three is a dense crowd of cheering citizens, probably the Livery, the most democratic body of the Corporation. Behind the semicircular railing which encloses the table is the end wall of the Chamber, with a statue of William IV in a high alcove. Small pictures on the wall are covered with curtains, with one exception, a T.Q.L. portrait of Queen Caroline". " - Minor stains but mostly clean, nice colour.

The murder was provoked by a shouting match between Bishop and another man on a nearby street that woke Cartwright. Irritated, he called the police. Bishop was arrested and an angry Cartwright followed him and the policemen, proclaiming angrily that he intended to press charges against his noisy neighbor. Angered by his taunting, Bishop broke free of the police and stabbed Cartwright to death. Bishop was sentenced at the Old Bailey but hanged outside Maidstone Prison, Kent, 27 days later. It was the last public execution to take place in Kent, less than a month before the last public execution in England, which occurred in London on May 26, 1868. Stab-stitched pamphlet in self-wrappers, thread perished, edges untrimmed. Light toning, light soiling to exterior, horizontal fold line, some faint creasing to spine and final leaf. A very good copy in its original state. $250. * Only edition, one of two issues from the same year (the other published in Dublin by Faulkner). Lord Ferrers was apparently a pleasant man, if arrogant, when sober, but prone to violent rages and brutality while drunk. After six years of abuse, his wife left him and returned to her family. She applied to Parliament for, and received, an order for maintenance. This came from a separate trust administered by Ferrers's steward, John Johnson. The Earl eventually convinced himself that Johnson was plotting against him, stealing his money and having an affair with his estranged wife. During a meeting he ordered Johnson to kneel and to beg pardon. Ferrers shot Johnson when he complied with this order. As established at trial, Ferrers had been sober when he shot Johnson, but quickly took to the bottle and assaulted the wounded man again. Johnson eventually died. Ferrers employed an insanity defense but was unsuccessful. He was sentenced to be hanged and anatomized, the last peer to be executed in this manner. Rochester: Published by S. Caddel, Gazette Office, 1831. Lithograph, 5.5 x 7.5 inches. Very good condition, mounted on a piece of worn blue paper. § John Any Bird Bell was the youngest person officially to be hanged in the 19th century, at the age of 14. His crime was the murder of Richard Taylor, aged 13, for 9 shillings, on Ma…y 4th 1831. The principal witness against him, was his accomplice and brother, James Bell, aged 11, who was reprieved. Public interest in the case was huge. There was a lengthy account in the Newgate Calendar and several broadside ballads appeared. The execution took place in front of Maidstone Prison, utilizing the new "drop" scaffold operated by William Calcraft, in front of a crowd of 5,000, on 1st August, 1831.
