Trade paperback. Zustand: Fair. Chuck Butler and Matt Carlstrom (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. [2], iv, 154 pages. Illustrations. Diagrams. Bibliography. Index. Cover worn, torn, soiled, and scuffed. This is an M1 Abrams Tank Simulation. Spectrum HoloByte, Inc. was a video game developer and publisher. The company, founded in 1983 in Boulder, Colorado by Jeff Sauter, Phil Adam and Mike Franklin, was best known for its simulation games, notably the Falcon series of combat flight simulators, and for publishing the first version of Tetris outside the Soviet Union (in 1987, for MS-DOS). Spectrum HoloByte also published games for various home computers and video game consoles. The chairman of Spectrum HoloByte, Gilman Louie, also founded Nexa Corporation, a developer of entertainment software, which went on to merge with Spectrum HoloByte and company President Phil Adam prior to the company's move from Colorado to California. In 1992, HoloByte received an investment from Kleiner Perkins, which let the company repurchase shares formerly owned by Robert Maxwell's companies, ending its ties to their bankruptcies. In December 1993, Spectrum HoloByte merged with MicroProse to form MicroProse Inc. For the following years, games from both companies were published under their respective brands, but in 1996 all titles were consolidated under the MicroProse brand. Hasbro Interactive acquired the merged company in 1998, and what had been Spectrum HoloByte ceased to exist when the development studio in Alameda, California was closed in 1999. Tank [tm] is a realistic military simulation of modern land combat. The program is based on a real military simulation network system used by the United States Army for training at Fort Knox. The system is called SIMNET. TANK is an accurate recreation of this systems.

Paperback. Zustand: Very good. The signed limited edition of Cover Up: The Governmental Conspiracy To Conceal The Facts About The Public Execution of John Kennedy, signed by the author, J. Gary Shaw. (illustrator). Limited Edition. Octavo, xvii, 227pp. Illustrated paperback, title on cover and spine. Illustrated throughout with charts, photographs and diagrams from the Warren Commission Report. Notable wear from handling to covers, underlining throughout. Light soiling to rear cover. Solid text block. From a limited edition of 3000 copies, this being number 237, numbered on the title page with a rubber stamp. This copy is signed by the author on his frontispiece portrait. Shortly after the death of President John F. Kennedy, President Johnson asked Chief Justice Earl Warren to head a presidential commission investigating the assassination of the president. What was formally known as the President's Commission quickly became known as the Warren Commission. The committee members were a bipartisan group from different government agencies, meant to avoid any appearance of a cover-up. The commission served from December 1963 until October 1964, concluding with the publication of the Warren Commission Report. Judge Warren advocated for more transparency in the final analysis but was rebuffed due to ongoing secret government actions. As a result, the lone gunman conclusion of the Warren Commission report was met with public skepticism, including from the author of this work. Signed.

circa 29,5 x 40 cm. 1 leaf with fold in the middle "Scene in Guildhall, the executioner pulling down a bust of Wellington. Described like this in the British Museum catalogue: "The hangman stands before the table dragging at a rope round the neck of a bust of Wellington (left) which he is about to pull from its pedestal. A scourge projects from his coat-pocket, and he says: 'This is a better job than a hanging match - double fees for this, I shall have the head dissected'. Just behind him (right) stands the Mayor Key, flanked by Aldermen Wood and Waithman, both holding up their hats! The Mayor, with a sly complacent smile, looks down, saying, 'He has forfeited all claims to honor and consistency, and shall no longer disgrace this place'. Wood:' Down with him; off with him'. Waithman: 'Hangman do your duty, as I hope every Englishman will'. Behind these three is a dense crowd of cheering citizens, probably the Livery, the most democratic body of the Corporation. Behind the semicircular railing which encloses the table is the end wall of the Chamber, with a statue of William IV in a high alcove. Small pictures on the wall are covered with curtains, with one exception, a T.Q.L. portrait of Queen Caroline". " - Minor stains but mostly clean, nice colour.

Farewell to the World of Richard Bishop, Who Now Lies Under Sentence of Death in Maidstone Gaol, For the Murder of Alfred Cartwright. London: H[enry]. Disley, Printer, [1868]. 9-1/2" x 7-1/2" verse broadside. Main text in two columns separated by rules. Some toning, creasing and a few minor stains, contemporary annotations to verso, otherwise fine. $200. * A broadside ballad issued before the public hanging of Bishop for the murder of his neighbor, Cartwright. The murder was provoked by a shouting match between Bishop and another man on a nearby street that woke Cartwright. Irritated, he called the police. Bishop was arrested and an angry Cartwright followed him and the policemen, proclaiming angrily that he intended to press charges against his noisy neighbor. Angered by his taunting, Bishop broke free of the police and stabbed Cartwright to death. Bishop was sentenced at the Old Bailey but hanged outside Maidstone Prison, Kent, 27 days later. It was the last public execution to take place in Kent, less than a month before the last public execution in England, which occurred in London on May 26, 1868. Our copy, likely unique, is probably a printer's proof. It is printed on scrap paper watermarked 1844 and has an unrelated annotation dated 1848 to its verso.

The principal witness against him, was his accomplice and brother, James Bell, aged 11, who was reprieved. Public interest in the case was huge. There was a lengthy account in the Newgate Calendar and several broadside ballads appeared. The execution took place in front of Maidstone Prison, utilizing the new ?drop? scaffold operated by William Calcraft, in front of a crowd of 5,000, on 1st August, 1831.

Very good. Edges reinforced on verso. Size 13.5 x 18.25 Inches. This is an extremely rare c. 1863 Civil War Era hand-tinted Endicott lithograph illustrating the execution of John Thomas Barnett, a Union deserter and highwayman. Significantly, at left, the image depicts the 1st and 2nd Regiment Colored Troops among the observers. A Closer Look The image looks on the execution of. John Thomas Barnett (c. 1844 - 1863), a private of the 11th Pennsylvania Calvary court-martialed for desertion and highway robbery. Barnett appears in the foreground at the moment of his death, having fallen backward over his own coffin. Clouds of gunsmoke surround the firing squad. Observing the scene are various military regiments, including the 21st Connecticut Volunteers, N.Y. battery, 5th Pennsylvania Calvary, 11th Pennsylvania Calvary (Barnett's own regiment), the 148th New York Volunteers, and most significantly, the 1st and 2nd Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. John T. Barnett, Highwayman Barnett was apparently quite the character, having been a highwayman well before the outbreak of the Civil War. An article in the October 1863 Daily Alta California tells his story, Capture of a Desperate Character. A desperado of no ordinary character has just been lodged in the jail of this city. Though quite young, having not much more than reached the age of maturity, his career of crime is fully equal to the bold, daring exploits of Dick Turpin, Tom King, and other noted highwaymen, of whom we read so much in works of romance. At the breaking out of the war he attached himself to the Third Georgia Regiment of Infantry, and remained with it until the evacuation of this city by the rebel troops. For a time he led a careless, easy life off the ill-gotten gains which he fraudulently obtained from various parties. Assuming the character of a gentleman, he succeeded in ingratiating himself into the goodwill of the Eleventh Pennsylvania Cavalry, which organization he joined, becoming tired of living after the style of a citizen. His restless disposition was constantly urging him to seek adventure. This caused him again to leave the regiment of his choice clandestinely. In company with a fellow soldier he sallied forth, stopped a carriage containing three gentlemen, whom, by the force of arms, he compelled to deliver up sixteen thousand dollars in money, two gold watches and a silver one, together with a diamond breast pin and a gold headed cane. He further intimidated his victims by threatening them that if they reported the outrage he would retaliate by murder. One of the number jumped from the carriage, and, making for the fields, was fired upon by both of the desperadoes. The case being brought before the military authorities, the base culprit was tried by a commission, and by it sentenced to be shot to death by musketry. Until within a short time past John Thomas Barnett, for that is his name, has been in durance vile, awaiting the fixing of the day of execution. His natural shrewdness did not even now desert him. Seeing a favorable opportunity for escape, he eluded the guard, and once again he had his freedom in his own hands. He immediately made for the Southern lines, which he reached; but his stay in 'Dixie' was destined to be short, as the ever-vigilant Eleventh Pennsylvania Cavalry were close on his track. Crossing the Blackwater, they scouted through the lower parts of this State and crossed over into North Carolina. Here, in Camden county, in company with a gang of guerrillas, about a dozen in number, the especial object of their search was found. The whole party were brought into Norfolk yesterday, and the highwayman is once again shut up from the outside world, with the reflection that the sentence will be rigidly enforced. Though he is of a nonchalant disposition, apparently composed of all that is necessary to be desperate, yet he may repent upon reflection. 1st and 2nd United States Colored Troops The 1st and 2nd United States Colored Troops (USCT).

Good. Some wear on original fold lines. Slight staining at top near image, and bottom margin. Left margin extended. Size 17.5 x 12 Inches. This is a 1793 William Lane broadside decrying the execution the French King Louis XVI while at the same time extolling the terrible industrial modernism of the guillotine itself. The author is justly horrified by the violence of the 'Reign of Terror' but at the same time macabrely fascinated with modern industrial efficiency of the 'killing machine.' The Modern Killing Machine While the guillotine became a symbol of the French Revolution, it had actually been in use for centuries as an efficient, humane, killing devise. The guillotine was invented with the specific intention of making capital punishment more humane in accordance with Enlightenment ideals, as previous methods of beheading - the headman's axe - were shown to be excessively painful and prone human error. In France it was the physician Joseph-Ignace Guillotin who, speaking before the National Assembly, proposed that capital punishment should take the form of decapitation 'by means of a simple mechanism.' This spoke to French Revolutionary Ideals, serving as a great equalizer, equally efficient at killing king or serf. It also marked a stark differentiation between the pre-revolutionary Ancien Régime executions, which often involved torture, and 'Enlightened' Revolutionary France. Nonetheless, during the Reign of Terror some 17,000 people were guillotined, among them the former king, Louis XVI, and his wife Queen Marie Antoinette. Towards the end of the Reign of Terror, even Revolutionaries like Georges Danton, Saint-Just, and Maximilian Robespierre found themselves under the blade. The Text The broadside features two columns of text, which reproduces the decree of the French National Convention declaring that Louis XVI would be executed, an account of his execution, and a short text portraying the King as accepting of his fate and willing to sacrifice himself. A woodcut of a French execution, although not that of Louis XVI, is included in the top third of the broadside. Per Kevin Sharpe and Steven N. Zwicker in their book Refiguring Revolutions: Aesthetics and Politics from the English Revolution to the Romantic Revolution , Lane produced this broadside and then sold it at a discounted price so that this horrid and unjust sacrificeshould be known to all classes of people, and in particular to the honest and industrious Artisan and manufacturer, who might be deluded by the false and specious pretenses of artful and designing persons. Nonetheless, the killing continued. Reactions to the French Revolution in Great Britain The French Revolution was, of course, very concerning to the British monarchy and government as a whole. Prime Minister William Pitt put in motion numerous measures that restrained personal liberty and political protest, leading to the era's nickname, 'Reign of Terror'. Measures restricting political meetings and banning treasonable publications were put in place and spies and other informers were used extensively. Also, the number of loyalist groups increased dramatically, all pledging allegiance to the Crown. Publication History and Census This broadside was published by William Lane and printed by his own Minerva Press in 1793. Several different editions of this broadside were issued, with the major differences involving the text. We have identified only one other example of this edition, though others may exist, at the Graphic Arts Collection at Firestone Library of Princeton University.
[China 1900-1912, Various Publishers]. Brown cloth album, ribbon tied, spine, 23.1 x 13 cm., gold stamped cover title, brown deckle-edge pages, very good, clean condition, 38 various photos & photo postcards, color and black & white. . *** **** *** . . PUBLIC BEHEADING IN CHINA . . KOWLOONG [sic for Kowloon, Hong Kong], CANTON, MANCHURIA, . . . NANKING, HANKOW, TIELING & TIENTSIN-PEKING . . * A stunning collection of bizarre and unusual images, seldom found. There were probably thousands of images of all walks of life of China done from about 1890-1945. While we have been an antiquarian Asian specialist dealers for 50 years, we have seen very few images of this subject, and never had an album with such a rounded and cohesive group on the subject of punishment, beheading and torture. . The Chinese legal system demanded severe punishment for heinous crimes, crimes against Confucianism and the state. The government exacted retribution in the most severe form of social and legal justice. . The most serious crimes such as harming one's parents or family members meant certain death, even dismembering called "LINCHI," where the criminal is cut into small pieces. This would mean his soul would never come to rest. . Beheading was the usual punishment for pirates, thieves and major crimes. The "cage" was for less severe crimes but often meant slow death by being suspended in the "cage" by one's neck until dead. The "cage" was used mostly on women for severe crimes, it could mean death or a very uncomfortable time. The "cangue" was for minor crimes and was used commonly for both men and women. . *** TECHNIQUE OF THE IMAGES: The album consists of some 38 individual original photographs in silver gelatin type images, standard photographs, hand-colored photographs, colored collotype photos and printed color collotypes. We have indicated the graphic technique with each description of the individual images. . *** SIZE: By and large most images are "postcard" size, give or take a few millimeters. Most are postcard format, that is on stiff card, with blank mailing address on the verso. . *** CONDITION: Each item is in very good or better condition. Where there is a condition issue, we point that out. If nothing is stated then it is in "very good or better condition." . *** DATES: A few of the cards are dated. We believe the earliest is from about 1900-1912. Some have postal dates, or written dates, others for example when Chinese wear the long braid queue, that indicates an image from just before or no later than 1912. . *** A LIST OF EACH CARD, ITS CAPTION AND TITLE: Not all cards have a title. Where there is not title we have attempted to put an appropriate title to indicate the subject. Most cards that have captions are in English, then followed by French, German and Russian. . *** TITLE/CONTENTS OF EACH CARD: . 1. English caption: "CHINESE COURT OF JUSTICE." This shows two criminals performing "Kow-Tow" by humbling themselves on their knees bowing down to the seated Magistrate, who is a Mandarin. He wears his official robe, sports sunglasses, wears the typical black hat, and review the charges at his desk. His deputy stands to his left, along with four other Imperial guards. Two of which each hold a long paddle to whip the criminals should they get out of hand. A scribe is seated to the Magistrate's right, brush in hand. The Imperial banner is in the background. The card is printed in collotype color. The verso states: "M. Sternberg & Co., Hong Kong. There is a penned Chinese greeting on the verso and a signature, else clean. Color collotype. . 2. English caption at the bottom: "EXECUTION OF 'NAMOA' PIRATES AT KOWLOONG [sic] for Kowloon." Eight British officials have witnessed the beheading of 12 Chinese Pirates on the beach in Hong Kong. Original silver gelatin photograph. . 3. Another b.w. photograph of the same as #2 above, in post card format. Original b.w. photograph. . 4. Another per above #2, 3 above, right, left corners broken away, lesser quality, same photograph. Published by M. Sternberg, Hong Kong. Black & white collotype photograph. . 5. English caption at the bottom: "THE HIGH EXECUTIONER. NOTE HIS HAPPY SMILE." Shows the High Executioner standing by his desk of justice'. He holds a very long beheading sword in his left hand [toward the camera] other officials look on. Original b.w. photograph. . 6. The High Executioner [same man as above] readies his next victim, he forces the convicted man into position. Several officials and onlookers observe. Original b.w. photograph. . 7. The Chinese peasant executioner stands behind two bound and kneeling convicted men in the dirt street. A mob of people are present, on the right are a number of foreigners in summer straw hats, as well as 2 groups of 5-6 U.S. Navy sailors in white uniforms looking on. This indicates the location to be a "Port of Call" for the American navy, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin and other "Treaty Ports." Most likely this is a scene in Hong Kong or Canton by the looks of the light clothing on the Chinese. Adjacent to the U.S. sailors are a group of Chinese onlookers on both sides of the street. Some wear a long queue of braided hair. This indicates a date of before 1912. Original b.w. photograph, a bit faded & grainy. . 8. English caption at the bottom: "BEHEADED IN MANCHURIA." This shows a scene of many Chinese soldiers, many of which hold rifles or swords. The Executioner is about to swing his very long sword and behead the convicted who is on his knees, blindfolded and has his shirt pulled off his shoulders. With a semi-circle of military onlookers. B.w. collotype. . 9. English caption: "IN CHINA." This early photo shows four Imperial Guards holding down the convicted man; one pulls his long queue of hair two others hold his arms while the fourth holds the sword just above the man's neck. There are two other Imperial Guards looking on. A large mob has gathered in the dirt covered street looking on curiously. There are a n.
