The Ettrick Shepherd was the pseudonym of James Hogg, a selfeducated Scots poet, novelist and essayist, who had worked as a farmhand and shepherd in his youth. Friend and biographer to Sir Walter Scott, Hogg helped to begin Blackwoods Edinburgh Magazine.
