Professionally and sympathetically rebacked in a matching dark green cloth, with the original decorative green cloth covers neatly laid on, gilt titles to spine. The front board remains highly attractive with sharp decorative gilt borders and a prominent central gilt vignette depicting the book's title flying from a lance flag. Rear board shows clean, deep blind-stamped detailing. All three page edges retain their original bright, lustrous gold gilding. Cloth shows some light rubbing to edges and some marking to the covers. Hinges are tight and the binding is entirely secure. Internally very clean and bright; text and plates remain remarkably crisp with only occasional light spots of foxing and occasional minor finger-marking to the blank margins. A handsome, structurally sound, and highly bright deluxe copy. Boasting a fascinating, multi-generational Victorian family provenance. Ink signature of Ethel Gray, dated 1880, to the front free endpaper. Below this is a detailed contemporary pencil inscription detailing the book's descent: "This book was given to Fanny Gray of Malvern by Mrs. Williamson, daughter of the then Bishop. (Rob Gray D.D.) and at her death was given to Ethel Gray." Tracing a direct lineage through the family of the prominent Bishop Robert Gray D.D. Mid nineteenth century half calf over boards, rubbed and abraded, the spine with five raised bands, wanting the title label. James Hogg ( 1770 - 1835 ) was a writer of verse also known as the Ettrick Shepherd because as a boy he tended sheep, he was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland. He made the acquaintance of Sir Walter Scott. The Forest Minstrel was Hogg's first literary project of which he contributed about two - thirds. For more details of Hogg see ODNB. …
