Condition is overall Very Good.** John Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. Jefferies valued and cultivated an intensity of feeling in his experience of the world around him, a cultivation that he describes in detail in The Story of My Heart, first published in 1883. Jefferies's success in conveying his awareness of nature and people within it, both in his fiction and in essays, has drawn admirers through the years.** The wood engravings that illustrate the Duckworth edition of 1923 are by the English artist Ethelbert White (1891-1972). An accomplished painter, White began engraving only in 1920. Illustrated with 36 woodcuts by Ethelbert White. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some wear to the edges and chipping to the upper left of the spine label. The cloth is a little toned. The contents, with a previous owner's name to the font endpaper, a small stain to the upper edge of the front endpaper are spotted throughout. Limited edition of 225 copies, this being copy number 68 and signed by Ethelbert White in blue ink on the limitation page. "The letters included in this volume were written by Oscar Wilde to his friend Robert Ross during the summer of 1897. Wilde was released on Wednesday, May 19th, after completing his sentence of two years imprisonment, and on that day he crossed with a friend to Dieppe where he was met by Robert Ross to whom he at once handed the manuscript of his prison letter no known as 'De Profundis'. .

Limited to 46 numbered copies, printed on Japanese vellum. A review by Beaumont of the Russian Ballet production of *L'Oiseau de Feu (The Firebird)*. Illustrated with five hand-colored pochoir illustrations by Ethelbert White consisting of frontispiece and vignettes. Ethelbert White studied at St. John's Wood School of Art, and worked as a landscape painter, poster artist and wood engraver.

Two beautifully printed woodland wood engravings from a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society, who was often to be found in the summers of the early 1920s, travelling around Surrey and Sussex with his wife in their horse-drawn gypsy caravan.
