El Gabinete de lectura española, o Colección de muchos papeles curiosos de escritores antiguos y modernos de la nación (1788-1793), fue una iniciativa nacida en el seno de los Reales Estudios de San Isidro, institución de enseñanza no universitaria, en su momento puntera por los métodos y…por algunas de las materias que acogió. De modo similar a como sucedía con los jesuitas, que tenían ejercicios públicos, los Reales Estudios dieron cabida también a esta dimensión popular y abierta, directriz que se insertaba en la tendencia generalizada en Europa a divulgar el conocimiento, para lo que se habían creado desde el siglo XVII instituciones como museos, academias y colegios que ofrecían conferencias, experimentos y exposiciones abiertos a los curiosos interesados. Una manifestación más de ese carácter divulgador de la ciencia se encuentra en la aparición de periódicos y publicaciones que difundían el saber, como este Gabinete de lectura, que no es un periódico, pero sí un impreso con periodicidad ocasional. Los responsables del Gabinete fueron tres, todos vinculados a los Reales Estudios de San Isidro: Miguel de Manuel, bibliotecario y catedrático de historia literaria; Isidoro Bosarte, bibliotecario tercero desde 1790 hasta que pasó a la Real Academia de Bellas Artes en 1792, y Pedro Estala, que le sustituyó en julio de ese año. Publicaron estudios de gran novedad sobre educación, bellas artes y literatura, y versiones previas de El celoso extremeño y Rinconete y Cortadillo, de Miguel de Cervantes, y de la República Literaria, de Diego de Saavedra Fajardo. El Gabinete se presenta ahora convenientemente anotado y con una introducción que enmarca las circunstancias de su publicación, así como las de sus autores, en el contexto político cultural del fin de siglo. Además, se aclaran dudas como las relativas a la autoría de los implicados. Joaquín Álvarez Barrientos es Profesor de Investigación del CSIC y Presidente de Honor de la Sociedad Española de Estudios del Siglo XVIII. Sus investigaciones se centran en la historia intelectual y cultural del Setecientos en adelante.
