Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. DESCRIPTION: Limited edition Folio Society facsimile of the celebrated Golden Cockerel Press edition of The Canterbury Tales, originally printed in 1929-31 by Robert and Moira Gibbings and illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Eric Gill. Both volumes housed in the original black cloth solander box, gilt-lettered to spine. A handsome and substantial fine-press facsimile of one of the major private press books of the twentieth century. CONDITION: Main volume near fine, bright, clean, square and tight, with strong gilt blocking and bright all-gilt edges. Contents clean and unmarked. A few leaves show a very slight shallow crease/soft bend at the top edge, minor and not affecting text or illustrations. see pictures. Otherwise fine. Companion volume clean and crisp; strong joints and wings, boards lie nearly flat, with only negligible natural lift at the fore-edge. The original black cloth solander box, is fine, clean and structurally sound, with firm joints and hinges. BRIEF BACKGROUND: Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is one of the foundational works of English literature, a lively cycle of stories told by pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. This Folio Society edition reproduces the famous Golden Cockerel Press production of 1929-31, which is especially admired for Eric Gill's wood engravings and for the close integration of image, border, initial letters, and text. Gill's work for the Golden Cockerel Press helped define the look of interwar British private press book design, making this facsimile desirable to collectors of Chaucer, Folio Society limited editions, Golden Cockerel Press, and fine illustrated books. NOTES: Due to the heavy weight and large size of this book, extra shipping charge may apply. Happy to provide you with a shipping quote. Eric Gill (illustrator).
