Illustrations of the burners, including close-ups of important components and labeled diagrams which show the location of those components, are accompanied by descriptions which give details of their construction, manufacture, installation and operation, along with relevant specifications and physical dimensions. Dampstaining evident to top edge and edge along spine on covers. Bottom left corner of back cover is creased. Library marking on front cover. Water damage to top inner corners of pages; pages are damaged where they have been pulled apart after sticking together. Pages 11-14 have detached from the binding. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. From the Engineer Company, bulletin D-20, a catalog of modern practice in combustion control, a description of the principles, apparatus and operation of balanced draft. The 8.5 by 11 inch staple bound softcover catalog is 29 pages and in good condition. The catalog is a thorough explanation of the process of combustion control with the engineering and running with photographs to illustrate. The cover is wrapped in brown paper glued at the spine. There is a number written to the front, but the pages are clean and without markings.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. A very nice, beautifully illustrated vintage trade bulletin publication by the Engineer Company of New York. With black & white photographs, diagrams, and other illustrations throughout. Softcover, saddle-stapled with brown paper wraps. 29 pages. A kraft-paper cover has been attached at the spine, including about an inch of the front and back covers. A call number and the name of the company are written in pencil on the front. I believe the cover was attached by a library to prevent further wear & tear to the book. An old library call number is written in ink on the front cover, alongside a date stamp from Dec 8 192(0/6?). The same date stamp appears on the first blank page of the book, as well. There is a minor bumped section on the right edge of the front cover and first several pages, and the corners of the book have been lightly bumped. Pages 10-16 show a small (less than 1 cm) closed tear on the top edge. Otherwise, this volume is in excellent condition. The binding is sturdy and there are no additional marks or writing. Features sections titled: The Science of Combustion, Elements of Combustion Control, The Principle of Balanced Draft, and more. A fascinating, very thorough & rare volume.

Laid in is an invitation card issued by the Congress' General Secretariat printed in Arabic with logo, 175x117mm, inviting Nabil Al-Zahairy to the Dinner hosted at the Hunting Club, Al Raqi, at 8PM on 22 April 1959. Guide good, creased, with tears and minor loss to the spine; invitation card good with centre-fold. The Arab League's Petroleum Affairs Department established the Arab Petroleum Congress as its forum to unify Arab oil policy. Iraqi engineer Mohammed Salman headed the Department, and was Secretary General of the Congress. The First Congress hosted in Cairo during 16-23 April 1959, involved Arab officials, Iran and Venezuela. In addition to valuable technical outputs, it laid the foundations for OPEC through the now famous meetings at Maadi Yacht Club attended by oil ministers Abdullah Tariki of Saudi Arabia, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo of Venezuela, the influential journalist Wanda Jablonski, among others. This keynote work, prepared by a Committee led by Farouk El-Bakary, opens with statements by Salman and Arab League Secretary General Abdel Khalek Hassouna, calling for a unified policy to maximise oil's benefits by developing local industry, and reducing dependence on crude oil revenues alone (pp4-5). It lists Congress and Exhibition staff, authorities and companies by country, for Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAR, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Yemen. The rest includes national petroleum sector profiles of varying focus and length. Iraq's for example is limited to state administration, while Saudi's describes Aramco's activities, staff, training, primary schools, scholarships, home loans, medical programme etc. And Kuwait's describes the history, activities and prospects of the Kuwait Oil Company, with profiles of the American Independent Oil Company and Arabian Oil Company. Other contributors include Phillips, Aero Service Corporation, C. Deilmann Bergbau, Deutz, and others promoting their services. A map shows Arabian oilfields. Photos include portraits of Salman and Hassouna, company personnel, activities and installations. This would have been issued to delegates, and is very rare with Worldcat locating only 4 to the American University in Cairo, Harvard, Stanford, and Exxon Mobil (OCLC 81152248).

See the Oxford DNB entry of the recipient James Payn (1830-1898), at the time of this letter the editor of the Cornhill Magazine. More significantly, Payn had since 1874 been a reader for Smith, Elder, and the present letter stems from the firm's interest in Forrest's 'tale of the Indian Mutiny' which they would publish in 1891 under the title 'Eight Days'. 2pp, 16mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with short closed tear at edge of postage fold. Addressed to 'James Payn Esqr.' and signed 'R. E. Forrest'. Reads: 'Dear Sir / I have not forgotten my promise to let you see my new novel first. I am at work on it now, but have been a good delayed [sic] by the illness and death of my mother and the having to attend to the winding up of her affairs. I hope I shall make better progress now.'.
