Near fine, lightly rubbed at the corners. This extensive study was compiled by Dr Chris Boland (EPD terrestrial ecologist) with fieldwork, research and photography by Jem Babbington, Phil Roberts, and Irene Linning among others, and opening statements by Dr Omar Abdulhamid (EPD Manager) and Humoud Al-Utaibi (EPD General Supervisor). Prepared for community members, students and specialists, it describes 200 bird species, 100 plants, 15 insects, 10 reptiles, 5 mammals, and 1 species each of fish, frog and fungus. Of these, 5 face global extinction among them the Saker Falcon, and at least 3 plants and 2 reptiles only occur in Arabia. Undated c1980s. This was originally produced and published by Aramco for its staff, but references to Aramco have been removed and replaced with IPA International Bookshops and Kruger's. Details include settlements of various sizes, surfaced primary roads, roads under construction, secondary routes unsurfaced, trails, proposed roads, railroads, international airports, airports, sand, and international boundaries. Presumably updated by Kruger, whose name appears to the corners, a note to the Legend states "All roads under construction are being completed as the progress was faster than our production". He also reflects on the near completion of the Saudi Government Railroad, and increased distribution of Aramco products within the country. Dated 15 April 1954 to Aramco Chair F.A. Davies' Foreword. Covers very good, rubbed and worn along the spine. Interiors near fine. This significant edition opens by marking the passing of King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud on 9 Nov 1953, which "all employees of the Company joined in mourning". There is also a poem in Arabic to the centre pages. Davies is encouraged by King Saud's "keen interest" in the company, which led it to increase wages for all Saudi employees by 12-20% effective from 1 Jan 1954, and improve benefits in education, housing, food, clothing and vacations. Davies offers "renewed assurance" to the new King and the Saudi people that Aramco "will continue the development of the oil resources of the Kingdom along sound engineering and business principles, and in a manner that will contribute to the best interests of all concerned" (pp2-3). The report also celebrates 20 years of growth and achievement with an article describing significant events since signing the Concession in 1933. The main chapters cover oil operations (exploration, drilling, producing, oil and gas, plants and pipeline, refining, marketing, engineering, transport etc); people (wages, housing, recreation, safety, The Oil Caravan magazine, employees with long service, thrift plans, manpower); health; industrial training; and community, industrial and agricultural development (new towns, and the Railway the management and supervision of which Aramco transferred to the Government on 1 Jan 1953). Dated 15 April 1959 to the transmittal letter by Aramco President Norman Hardy and Chair F.A. Davies. Hardy and Davies report on slightly increased production with demand expected to rise, with major projects including the offshore Safaniya and Manifa Fields, Khurai, and Fazran, with additions to the tanker terminal at Ras Tanura. Pay and benefits improved for Saudi workers: the working week reduced to 42 hours allowing for more leisure time. The Riyal payroll (for local staff) increased. And benefits amounted to almost as much as pay. Of Aramco's 17,171 employees, 70% were Saudi Arabs, who advanced into higher jobs previously held by foreign employees. (1), 40pp with many colour maps and charts + 2 full-page map overlays + colour folding map. Wraps good, rubbed to the spine ends and edges, with some scuffing to the back. Interiors very good except for a red tick by a line in the contents table. Dated on the eve of the Suez Crisis, this presents Aramco's history and analysis of the present situation for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Iran. A full-page topographical map of the Arabian Peninsula and Iran is overlaid with a map locating the oil facilities. A world map showing world petroleum movements in 1954 is overlaid with a map showing the movements in 1946 to highlight the increase. The folding map, titled "Middle East Oil Concessions", covers the Arabian Peninsula and western Iran with a detailed key indicating their term, area covered, and ownership structure. Other maps show oilfields and facilities, probability of crude oil occurence, production, geology, financial interests, along with historical series showing the formation of Saudi Arabia, the award of concessions over time across the region, and changes in the Aramco concession. …

Printed in Beirut by the Middle East Export Press (Basic, Conversational) and Catholic Press (Spoken). 142, (2); 159; viii, 159, (1)pp. The Basic covers are very good, marked to the back, the interiors near fine except for working notes penciled to the first few pages; Spoken covers very good with previous owner's name to the front, and interiors near fine except for ink annotation to a couple of pages; and Conversational covers good, numbered in crayon to the front, interiors near fine with some pencil marks. These are undated, but the Catholic Press printer's code states 1956. Between them, they mark a major advance in Aramco's Arabic language training from the pocket sized phrasebooks introduced in the mid-1940s to early 1950s. (Alongside this were separate works on colloquial, newspaper, and basic written Arabic). This course was first prepared by Aramco's Training Department for its Foreign Service Training Center located at Riverhead, Long Island before moving to Sidon. It was "subjected to the test of use, revised and improved over a period of several years", and accompanied in the classroom by records (Spoken Arabic Introduction). BASIC ARABIC: This introduces new employees to spoken Gulf Arabic: "It is the basis of the intensive Arabic course offered at Aramco's Sidon Training Center in Lebanon. Others who have had a different introduction to Arabic will find it useful because of its coverage of typical everyday situations". It contains 50 Units to be practiced as live dialogue for maximum effect (Introduction). These are untitled but to give a couple of examples they relate to heading into town to see a film (Unit 6), a discussion of the day's news referencing Aramco's literacy teaching to local staff (Unit 17), the whereabouts and wellbeing of Abdulla (Unit 18), locating a driver and readying a car for a tour of the pipeline (Unit 21), signing in and out at the Main Gate (Unit 26), organising a crew to work on cylinders (Unit 42), repairing a ship's engine at the pier (Unit 43), etc. Also included is a Grammar, Vocabulary, Adjectives, and colours. Once mastered, students are urged to progress to "Spoken Arabic". SPOKEN ARABIC: This contains 12 themed Units for greetings and general phrases; on the job and asking directions; an interview; in the dining hall; a new employee; in the market; truck breakdown and car trouble; laying a water pipe (2 Units); the garage; a new houseboy; and seeing Dhahran. The latter takes in a tour of the machine shop, club house, movie theatre, swimming pool and dance hall, the Saudi camp (with its dorms, barastis and tents), the mosque, and oil stabiliser. Appendices cover the use of Arabic in training Saudi employees, and using a fire extinguisher. Students are directed from here to "Conversational Arabic", or "Basic Arabic" if not done already. CONVERSATIONAL ARABIC: In 2 parts this opens with 10 common everyday Conversations: "Only by imitating minutely the pronunciation, intonation and stress patterns of a native speaker can these conversations come alive and be meaningful". The second and larger part focuses on Constructions "that illustrate grammar and are far more useful than any set of grammatical rules. If you have worked carefully through the grammatical sketches in Basic Arabic and Spoken Arabic you will find that study of the Constructions will rapidly broaden your insight into the grammar of spoken Arabic". This was the most advanced and final part with students encouraged from here to "Try out your Arabic every chance you get. And if your opportunities aren't frequent enough, you will have to go out of your way to make new opportunities" (Introduction).…

These are from Aramco's English language training programme introduced during 1960-62 for local employees native in the colloquial Arabic of Eastern Saudi Arabia. The Series consisted of 12 books, one per trimester for 4 years. As with its Arabic language training for ex-pat employees (1956), it draws thematically on "the overall work of Aramco, and the background of science and technology, basic to the oil industry". It also taps into key Saudi locations (Riyadh, Hofuf, Dhahran, Ras Tanura etc), as well as Arab and Islamic history and culture. Vocabulary was based on the "Aramco English Series Word List" of 2,375 words compiled from 3 different word frequency counts (Thorndike et al, Faucett-Maki, WPA), other words "very common in the Aramco work situation" (eg, welder, carpenter, driver, rig), and words necessary to deal with specific subjects such as geography (eg, continent, peninsula, Asia). The grammar drew on C.C. Fries "The Structure of English" (1952), and pronunciation on Kenyon and Knott's "Pronouncing Dictionary of American English" (1953). Although this is a partial set, it gives a decent idea of the method, and of the progression from the earliest to last lessons. Year 1 is based on 20 lessons including 4 reviews per trimester. The themes in Trimester 1B are: What do you do?; What does he do?; Goings and comings; You and me; What is he doing?; In class; Telling time; Was and were; My family; At home; My room; Usually, never, always; The and A; All, some, none; and Many and much. Those in Trimester 1C: Questions; Negatives; An English test; Going home; At work; In the carpenter shop; Jobs and people; Not and No; Vacations; Going away; Buying things; Commands and requests; Going to the clinic; What do we want to buy?; On the job; and Can and Could; with supplements for the library, market, and clinic. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. A unique composite atlas made up of 13 cropped and consecutively joined Joint Operations Graphics (Air) 1:250,000 sheets. An improvisation like this was a practical way around of carrying several standard format charts that could not conveniently show the long linear routes flown. These are bound in 4 sections containing 3, 4, 4, and 2 concertina-folded sheets respectively, in crudely fashioned untitled green duct tape covered card wraps 32x24cm. Each concertina folds horizontally on a N-S alignment revealing a total of 26 map spreads (6, 8, 8, and 4 respectively) each measuring 64x24cm. The interiors are generally good, with numerous annotations, one spread covered in heavy clear plastic with felt pen notes. To ensure continuous images, marginal data (maker, titles, editions, dates, keys etc) have been removed. One spread has a Joint Operations Graphic (JOG) (Air) 1:250,000 scale and a Conversion of Elevations table taped on. From this, the sheets have been identified as: NG-38-3, 4, 7, 8; NG-39-1, 2, 5, 6; NH-38-12, 15, 16; and NH-39-9, 13. This may date to the 1980s up to 1990 based on inclusion of King Khaled Military City (built by the US Army Corps of Engineers 1976-87), and the Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline) appears still to be in use (it operated to Jordan up to 1990). Annotations around Dhahran, KKMC, Tapline and Aramco installations suggest this may have been prepared by an Aramco or USAF pilot. CONTENTS: Starting on the Gulf coast and heading west, the 4TH section (made up of 2 vertically aligned sheets including NG-39-2 Al-Jubayl, NG 39-6 Az Zahran, Saudi Arabia; Bahrain) covers several tiny islands disputed by Saudi and Kuwait to the north, Jubail, Ras Tanura, Qatif, Dammam and Dhahran, and northern Bahrain showing on and offshore activities in detail. Locations around Dhahran have been labelled A-D in black felt tip. The 3RD section (4 sheets including NH-39-9, NH-39-13, NG-39-1, NG-39-5) covers from Al-Faw and Bubiyan Island on the Kuwait-Iraq border, down the Gulf coast through Failaka Island and the east of Kuwait City, via Mina Saud, Ras al Khafji, and Al Mishab, then inland into Dikakah. The 2ND section (from 4 sheets including NH-38-12, NH-38-16, NG-38-4, NG-38-8) takes in the Iraq-Kuwait border south from Al-Himar, heading south through the rest of Kuwait City, the Kuwaiti Oilfields (Al Burqan, Al Wafran, Umm Gudair), and across the Saudi border deep into Ad Dibdibah and Summan. The 1ST section (from 3 sheets including NH-38-15, NG-38-3, and NG-38-7) covers from Khawr Ghunayn in Saudi (with annotated air routes ms named "Snow Bird" and "Firebird", possibly civilian or military callsigns); Ad Dibdibah including Al Qaysumah where the Aramco pipeline ends and Tapline begins, Hafar Al-Batin; King Khalid Military Town; Ad Dahna and As Summan including part of main road under construction. Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Twenty (of 21) colour printed maps, all 1st editions. Varying sizes, folded and stored in their original printed buff envelopes 24x30cm. The maps are mostly fine, neatly folded. I-207A has previous owner's ink stamp to lower right corner and some spotting. I-210A is VG with some rubbing along folds. The envelopes are good to near fine with some creasing and closed tears. I-216A is ink stamped "without relief" to the front. This series was one of the most significant products of the groundbreaking mapping project USGS conducted for the Saudi Government with Aramco during 1956-63. This mapped Saudi Arabia in 21 Quadrangles on a 1/500K scale with one series for geology (I-200A to I-220A) and another for geography (I-200B to I-220B). It involved some of the most eminent geologists of the day, among them Glen Brown (USGS), Richard Bramkamp and Max Steineke (Aramco's early pioneers). This series provided the foundation for the Saudi Arabian Mineral Exploration Project launched in 1963, coordinated by Brown from Jeddah, guiding fieldwork, and generating a series of Technical Letters and Reports. Included here are 20 of the 21 Quadrangles (I-208A Western Persian Gulf not present), but also including strategic and sensitive parts of Abu Dhabi and Oman before frontiers had been defined. Titled and captioned in English and Arabic, each has a detailed geologic commentary, compilation sources, glossary, compilation sources, cross sections, and Index Map. Features include settlements (including forts, ruins, cultivated areas, date gardens). Transport covers from roads to camel trails, rail and landing fields. Among these are named ancient routes such as the Darb Zubaydah, Darb al Khaif, and Darb al Hajj (eg I-202A). Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Burgundy cloth ringbinder silver-titled to front and spine with AOC monogram, with "Copy 52" sticker to spine, 28x32cm. Unnumbered sheets with approx (364)pp text + approx (104)pp drawings most of which folding, with printed card tab dividers. Binder very good with a few surface scratches. Interiors near fine with some ms annotation, some of which on paper stapled in. Section 9 of Part II has been removed and replaced with a pink card with initialled ms note stating that "Section 9 sent to B.K. Associates for tech review 12/27/78 gd"). An extremely rare internal document, its Distribution List indicates that Copy Nos 1-50 were sent to SAO, AOC, and Houston, with some set aside for Construction Bidders. This Copy 52 may thus have been retained by those that prepared it. Aramco began its offshore explorations in Gulf waters in 1949. It discovered the vast Safaniya Oil Field in 1951, and began production in 1957. It introduced its first Mobile Drilling Platform (AMDP-1) here in 1958 to overcome the limitations of its fixed platform. AMDP-1 was designed, and built in the US in 1957 by Aramco and RG Le Tourneau, assisted by the US Air Force. It was adapted to Gulf conditions, and towed to Ras Tanura in early 1958, with its triangular shape aiding mobility. It underwent improvements in the field, and had covered its costs by 1964 (Aramco World, March / April 1964: 3-7). In recognition of its benefits, Aramco bought AMDP-2 from Le Tourneau in 1966, for operations in the Northern Area out of Ras Tanura. As AMDP-2 had "been operating continuously on workovers and drilling operations since purchase date", this document justifies and details a major repair and refit during Dec 1978 to Jan 1980 at yards in and outside the Gulf "to maintain the equipment in safe and efficient operation" (Part I). CONTENTS: At the front are Minutes of the apparently key 22 Aug 1978 Meeting (6)pp, including the Approval Sheet with photocopied signatures of senior staff from Exploration and Development, Crude and Infrastructure Projects, Northern Area Drilling, Operations Engineering, Marine Department, Loss Prevention and Environmental Affairs, Technical Services, Project Planning and Budget Coordination, and Budget. It also includes a letter from GF Larsen (VP Exploration and Development) to Ben Turner (Manager, PRU Projects Dept) stating that "having the AMDP-2 out of service for twelve months is unacceptable" and proposing workarounds. The document proper begins with title and Distribution List (2)pp. Part I contains the Project Proposal (41)pp with drawings, meeting notes etc. Part II is the Scope of Work with (6)pp prelims followed by Sections 0-8 and 10-11 with Section 9 removed as noted above (unnumbered: 17, 17, 6, 3, 3, 23, 30, 9, 37, 26, 2, 12pp). This covers a general explanation, rig structure, spudlegs, jacking, derrick subbase, machinery and pipeline systems, living quarters, deck equipment, electrical installations, and steel surface.
