Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. xii, 342 pages, 8 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations, maps ; 21 cm ; OCLC 5593443 ; Bound in red cloth. Pictorial front cover and spine stamped in gold. All edges colored olive green; George Herbert (1866-1958) and Charles James L'Estrange (1867-1947), two English writers who worked together on several children's adventure books, wrote under the pen name Herbert Strang. ; "Samba lay face downwards upon the yellow sand, amid which his body shone in the sunlight like polished ebony. Behind, the rising bank was thick with trees and shrubs ablaze with colour, overspread with the delicate tracery of lianas and, creeping plants. Here was a spot of red, there a dash of orange; at intervals the pale yellow flowers of climbing gourds and the mauve blossoms of convolvuli peeped from the wall of vivid green. Tiny rills made music as they trickled through the foliage; and near at hand was a path trodden by herds of antelopes as they came to drink." ; "Nearly a generation has passed since King Leopold was entrusted by the great Powers with the sovereignty of the Congo Free State. The conscience of Christendom had been shocked by the stories, brought back by Stanley and other travellers, of Arab slave raids on the Upper Congo; King Leopold, coming forward with the strongest assurances of philanthropic motive, was welcomed as the champion of the negro, who should bring peace and the highest blessings of civilization to the vast territory thus placed under his sway. For many succeeding years it was supposed that this work of deliverance, of regeneration, was being prosecuted with all diligence; the power of the slave traders was broken, towns were built, roads made, railways opened-none of the outward signs of material progress were wanting.the civilized world has been horrified to find that this imposing structure has been cemented with the life blood of the Congo races; that the material improvements to which the administrator of Congoland can point, have been purchased by an appalling amount of suffering inflicted upon the hapless negoes. The collection of rubber, on which the whole fabric of Congo finance rests, involces a disregard of liberty, and indifference to suffering, a destruction of human life, almost inconceivable. Those who best know the country estimate that the populationis annually reduced, under King Leopold's rule, by at least a hundred thousand. No great war, no famine, no pestilence in the world's history has been so merciless a scourge as civilization in Congoland." ; Contents: The Coming of the White Man -- "Rubber is Death" -- Monsieur Elbel -- Night Alarms -- The Order of Merit -- Samba is Missing -- Blood Brothers -- Jack in Command -- Samba Meets the Little Men -- A Trip with a Crocodile -- Bula Matadi Comes to Ilola -- Samba comes Back -- "Honour thy Father and thy Mother" -- Lokolobolo's First Fight -- A Revolt at Ilola -- The House by the Water -- A Buffalo Hunt -- Elbel's Barrels -- Breaking the Blockade - David and Goliath -- A Dash and all Together -- A Message and a Meeting -- Elbel Squares Accounts -- A Solemn Charge -- A Break for Liberty -- Turning the Tables -- The Return of Lokolobolo -- The Chicotte -- Reaping the Whirlwind -- Sinews of War -- Summons and Surrender -- The Dawn of Freedom -- Conclusion ; front endpaper excised ; dig at top of spine ; else G. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. lxvii, 760 pages : illustrations ; 29 cm OCLC 52073501 This reprint of the first edition of Sweet's Catalog commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Sweet's business."--Foreword ; "In offering to the public, and especially to the architects of the United States, the first edition of Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction, the publishers have realized at the very outset the importance of stating clearly, first, what the book is, and secondly, the reasons for commending it to the architectural profession for their use and support. .to explain in a few words the character and purpose of the work, . a embodied in these first successful efforts toward a really scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction. Let the matter be looked at entirely from the point of view of the architect. For a period of a dozen years, every possible method of collecting, sorting, classifying, filing and indexing all the catalogues and circulars of building materials was conscientiously given a fair trial, and after a thorough test, every method was just as conscientiously abandoned. They were abandoned because they did not work well in the specification room. They were not practicable. Everything was tried, arrangements of shelves, bookcases, pasteboard boxes, filing cases, patent binders, filing cabinets, cases of drawers, indexing schemes and " index- rerums. " At first, all the big books were put together in one place and all the little books in another place; and then all the big and little books were mixed up together, and indexed according to subject. Some had four pages, and some had four hundred pages. Barely two were of the same shape or superficies. The little ones would not stand up, and could not be gotten at when laid flat. Another elaborate system was introduced, and a voluminous cross-index started, but the big books contained too much useless matter, and the little books got lost or mislaid or could not be found just when wanted. Then the writer decided, after much time and expense, that the present system of publishing and distributing catalogues, as far as the architect is concerned, might be rightly termed " The Catalogue Delusion, " and that the only solution of the problem must lie in a scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction, gradually developed toward an ideal result by the co-operation of manufacturer and architect. Briefly, then, what is Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction? It is a scientific catalogue book system ( a volume or series of volumes) , as easy to refer to as a dictionary, consisting of groups of catalogues from which as much unnecessary matter as possible has been eliminated, carefully indexed and cross- indexed, and sent out gratuitously by the publishers to every architect of good standing. Each catalogue in the work is organically arranged in its parts. It proceeds in a regular order from fact " A " to fact " Z " . Illustrations of a certain class are all grouped and arranged according to some obvious plan. " Literature " and " mere writing " are omitted, as an architect has no time in his office for either."; authors and compilers include Wm. Martin Aiken, Claire Allen, J. M. Baillie, Charles I. Berg, Otto Block, Claude Bragdon, Arnold W. Brunner, George Cary, Henry M. Congdon, James B. Cook, Francis W. Cooper, R. L. Daus, Robt. E. Dexter, A. F. D'oench, Gustav W. Drach, Wm. S.
