In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Fair. Two consecutive issues of this field newspaper printed on economy wartime paper, 29x42cm. 4, 4pp with b/w maps and photos. Fair only, browned with fold tears, minor loss (generally not affecting content), irregularly folded with rubbing along folds, and previous owner's neat ms annotations. The paper was launched in 1941. At the time these were issued (20 and 21 April 1945), the British Eighth Army and US Fifth Army were well advanced in the Spring Offensive in Italy, which would soon result in the surrender of all Axis forces in Italy (6 April - 2 May 1945). The Eighth had just bypassed the difficult final Senio River defences and entered the Po Plains during Operation Buckland / the Battle of Argenta Gap (12-19 April). Both issues report on progress with this Offensive as well as the wider war effort and the military, politicians, diplomats, and civilians involved in it. Issue 160 for example leads on the Fifth's approach on Bologna, and the Eighth's taking of Portomaggiore after house-to-house fighting. Among other content is Churchill's announcement and details of a forthcoming visit by British MPs to several named concentration camps "so that they could have visual, first hand proof of German atrocities" (n159 pp1, 3; n160: p3).

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. Original black printed pale green card wraps 21x27cm. Printed by the Printing and Stationery Services, Middle East Forces in May 1943 (dated 5-43 to the code). 92, (1)pp + 11 sheets (o/w 8 folding) containing colour and b/w maps, plans and diagrams bound into appendices as called for. Covers good with the General Purpose Transport Company's ink stamp and previous owner Captain Woodward's name in blue crayon to the front, repaired along the spine with archival tape. Interiors very good, sheets neatly folded with some creases. Rare, with Worldcat locating 4 institutional copies (OCLC 220579935: Harvard, US Army War College, Australian War Memorial, National Library of Israel); not recorded on Library Hub. This presents recent lessons from the Allied victory in the Second Battle of El Alamein (23 October - 11 November 1942). Montgomery had assumed command of the Eighth Army in August. In the lead up he decided not to attack German positions until he had built up sufficient fighting force particularly armour. In the meantime he was able to repel German attacks with RAF help, retaining control of the Axis minefields, and inflicting sufficient casualties to deter further immediate attack. He began preparations at once, forming 10 Corps (the new armoured strike force), and conducted intensive training in breaking through minefields at night. The plan (Operation Lightfoot) involved clearing gaps through minefields 5,000-9,000 yards deep for 10 Corps to pass through in the North (the main attack), and 7th Armoured Division in the South (subsidiary attack). In four Parts, Part I describes the operation including plan, break-in (23-26 Oct), enemy counter-attacks (27 Oct), the changed plan (27-31 Oct), and break-out (1 Nov onwards). Folding maps show troop groupings and break-in (1/133,000; 56x71cm), and Armoured Brigade positions during 2-4 November (1/50K; 36x25cm). Part II gives lessons for training, cooperation, initiative, concentration - dominance of artillery, influence of minefields, camouflage, regrouping, move forward of Armoured Division, control of road movement, and Army-Air cooperation. Two maps on one sheet show Divisional Minefield Gaps, with a system diagram for marking, keeping open, and controlling minefield gaps. The substantial Part III gives general lessons (security, command and HQ location, intelligence, coordination), and specific for armoured, artillery, engineers, infantry, intercommunication, administrative, RASC, Medical, hygiene, RAOC, and REME. Diagrams show artillery trace in support of infantry attack, engineers clearing a gap, and a cleared gap with markers and lights. Part IV addresses enemy methods with plans showing a battalion strongpoint, and Italian Company positions.
