Erstausgabe
First Edition. Small Octavo. 18cm. Publisher's purple card wraps in a Japanese coptic style binding with an illustrated paper title label applied to the front wrap. Some mior sunning and discoloration to the wraps, some light cosmetic fraying to the stiching, and some dog-eared corners in places. Internally clean, illustrated througout. A very good, neat little book. Clearly intended for the families of US servicemen and women stationed in Japan. Details of note include a run down on the seasonal weather in the US zones of residence (on Honshu it was Tokyo-Yokohama and the Sendai area; on Hokkaido, Sapporo; and on Kyusha, Fukuoka among other areas), how to secure housing and how that housing will differ from what Americans are accustomed to, schooling, banking etc. Clearly stemming from the US's post war prosperity and lone superpower status, some of the entries would not have been out of place in a British 19th century military guide: "Servants are of medium quality.the average family will require about three; a cook, a washerwoman, and a Houseboy or girl. They are capable of picking up enough English.but to find a well-trained house servant is very rare." The slim volume is illustrated throughout with photographs, and some characteristically military cartoons. From differing perspectives the guide can be seen both as rather brash and colonial, and as attempting from a position of ignorance to anticipate potential culture shock and hazards on all sides of the divide; victor and vanquished, foreigner and citizen, soldier and civilian. Less than a handful of copies represented in institutions.
