This new Dover edition has been revised and enlarged by the author to include a later article of his, Some Questions in Aesthetics, in which he expands upon several of his original arguments. -- In his search for the answer to the question What is art? and for the nature of the aesthetic experience, Prof. Ducasse examines the theories of Plato, Aristotle, Darwin, Croce, Tolstoi, Schiller, Spencer, Dewey, and others, appraising such diverse conceptions of art as that art is the creation of beauty, the expression of emotion, the imaginative expression of a wish, imitation, a means of attraction, play, etc. The aesthetic attitude, empathic and peripathic perception, ecpathy, objectification, the aesthetic object, aesthetic feelings, form and content in designs and in dramatic entities, aesthetic values, beauty and ugliness, the tragic and the comic, standards of art criticism, and other important topics in aesthetics are searchingly discussed. Prof. Ducasse contends that the aesthetic experience is essentially subjective and therefore the evaluation of the aesthetic merits of a given work of art ultimately depends on the individual taste, whether widely shared or not, of the person who contemplates the work.
