Paperback. Zustand: Good. This beautifully produced, new history of medieval Glasgow consists of eight chapters each written by a different author, among them David Sellar, Dr E Patricia Dennison, and Dr James Macaulay. It considers areas such as law, courts and people, the great buildings of early Glasgow, daily life, disease and death, and the role of the church. Professor Michael Lynch's introduction expertly draws the chapters together, and the timeline, from the 7th to the 17th century provides the reader with a useful reference tool. "It was the voice of Whitefield which was the chief agent in starting that religious movement which grew to be almost a second Reformation in England. He soon was joined by others in the same grand cause, the Wesleys pre-eminent among them, but Whitefield was as much the representative man of the Great Revival of that time, as Luther had been of the Reformation in the sixteenth century. The influence of Whitefield for good, not only in England but also in America, can hardly be over-estimated." 17cms x 12cms. Important topographical guide to the remotest, now uninhabited, island of the Hebrides. Samuel Johnson applauded the History of St. Kilda as "A pretty piece of topography", and took a copy of the guide on his famous tour of the Hebrides, meeting with Macaulay to discuss the work. There is some contention surrounding the authorship of the work, with a theory, popularised by Johnson and James Boswell, that Dr John Macpherson of Skye had actually written the book working from the notes of Macaulay.
