Chocolate brown cloth cover has bumped tips to the boards, a slight amount of crushing to the bottom spine, and some chipping to the top spine and shows moderate shelf wear to the lower edges of the boards. The front board is pulling away from the spine slightly, but is still very much attached. Pages show signs of discoloration, due to age, but are clean, unmarked, and attached to the spine. Within this book are two newspaper clippings that are undated that are fascinating reading regarding world affairs, and every day life in London from over 100 years ago. The covers are generally in very good condition; volumes II to V have small patches (no more than 3.5cm across) where the polished surface leather is worn away, to reveal the softer leather beneath; there is a little light rubbing at the outer sides of the spines, and the beginnings of cracking in a couple of places, but all covers are securely attached and unusually there is scarcely any wear at heads and tails of spines (Vol. VI is lightly rubbed); all title-labels are bright and fully intact; internal contents are equally good, and, apart from occasional very minor spotting near ends of volumes, are clean, bright and unmarked throughout. A handsome, uniformly-bound, 9 volume set of first editions. Macaulay (1800-1859) returned to England from India in 1838 and entered Parliament as a member for Edinburgh. He became secretary for war in 1839, with a seat in Lord Melbourne's Cabinet but the ministry fell in 1841 and he found the time to publish his Lays of Ancient Rome (1842) and a collection of Critical and Historical Essays (1843), before his History in 1848. The work, much celebrated in its day, has become the archetype for the 'Whig' interpretation of history â" of human progress from a benighted past to its glorious present. It focuses on the transition from the last Stuart monarch James II and VII to the co-regency and eventual reign of William III to his death in 1702, encompassing the Glorious Revolution and the Jacobite risings as England's last Catholic monarch was overthrown and the Kingdom entrusted to Dutch Protestant hands. This set is also bound with Macaulay's Miscellaneous Writings, featuring his essays on Athenian orators, principal Italian writers, and the author's numerous contributions to the Edinburgh Review and the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
