Laing enlarged the collection but passed away before the dictionary could be published. The text finally came to publication through the editorial work of Laing's daughter, with help from W. A. Smith and A. F. Johnson of the British Museum. The eighth and ninth volumes constitute additional supplements to the original collection, compiled by Dennis E. Rhodes and Anna E. C. Simoni. These were published twenty years after the release of the seventh volume. In publisher's original red cloth bindings. Unclipped dust wrapper to Volume IX. Ex-library copies. Each volume features the bookplate of the Devon County Council Reference Library to the front paste down. Volume IX instead features this plate to the front free endpaper and the additional bookplate of Exeter City Library to the front paste down. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing. Archival sticker to each spine. Volume IX dust wrapper suffers slightly more from discolouration and shelf wear, featuring noticeable creasing and fraying to the top edge. Encased in protective binding. Internally, firmly bound. Closed tear to the rear free endpapers of Volume VII. Johnson.After Samuel Halkett's death in 1871, the materials he collected for a dictionary of anonymous literature were given to John Laing. Laing enlarged the collection but passed away before the work was published. The work was then edited and published by Laing's daughter.This set comprises volumes I to VI (published 1926 to 1932) of the main volumes, which contain the alphabetically arranged dictionary, with a supplement to the rear of volume VI. In addition, this set includes volume VII (published 1934), which contains the index (by authors, initials and pseudonyms) and the second supplement. Two extra volumes, not included in this set, were later added in 1956 and 1962. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart, with very light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are untrimmed but very bright and clean. Dust wrappers are generally smart, with light chipping to the wraps, more so to the head and tail of the spine, and closed tears to the flyleaves. Light marks to the wraps and sunning to the spines of the wraps. Scattering of spots to the spines of the wraps to volumes II-VI. Two tape repairs to the rear of the wrap, and a loss to the tail of the spine of the wraps, to volume IV. Ink mark to the front of the wrap to volume V. Fine. book.
