Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The purpose of this study is to isolate and define the concepts associated with the cow in the Rigveda so as to aid in the overall comprehension of passages wherein terms for 'cow' appear. The usual terms for 'cow' are aghnya (aghnya), usra, usriya, dhenu, go, vasa, and stari. Together, they occur nearly 700 times in the Rigveda, that is, more frequently than any other animal, and about as frequently as references to Indra, the most popular god in the Rigveda. The significant feature of this vast amount of material on the cow is that 'cow' terms appear in every major subject treated in the Rigveda. This text considers the economic, ritual and mythological aspects of Rigvedic life, though not with equal emphasis. The subject is dealt with in five chapters with a comprehensive analysisIntroduction, the cow in vedic economic life, in the vedic ritual, in vedic mythology and epithets. The Indra-Vrtra myth, the myth of the Panis and other mythological contexts are elaborately discussed. An exegesis on selected passage, Bibliography, Index of Rigvedic passages and word index are added for easy reference.

Mathura's 'personality' and the development of narrative art. This anthology represents papers most characteristic of the author's investigative strengths and methods in the domains of Indian art history and indology. The selected papers were published between 1979 and 2015. In numerous cases, the large time span covered by these papers has been brought up-to-date. New information reflects developments in the field or in the author's thinking, and it is noted by an asterisk at the end of a given paper. The sixteen papers in Volume I fall within four main themes: Saiva, Vaisnava, Secular and Folk Themes as well as Narrative Art. Within these broad categories, analyses and interpretations range across a wide spectrum: Indus Valley material, early sectarian sculpture, temple architecture, miniature paintings, Vedic ritual construction. Most of the topics treat the art in the context of the culture of the Indo-Gangetic Plains, that is, India above the Vindhya Mountains. The author's studies on the arts beyond this region, comprising the arts from Gandhara, will form the contents of Volume II. Some specific topics advanced in this volume are: the likely Vedic origin of Rudra-Siva; the meaning and significance of Saiva and Vaisnava icons with the multiplicity convention; Krsna's Pre Puranic imagery from Mathura; a new attribute associated with Samkarsana/Balarama; the importance of courtesans in ancient India and a newly recognized statue of one beauty; icons attesting to ancient Snake cults; understanding the artistic consequences of Mathura's emphasis on the oral transmission of sacred knowledge. Scholars and students alike will be stimulated by the findings and methodology found in this volume.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - One of the first things that strike the Western viewer of Indian art is the multiplicity of heads, arms and eyes. This convention grows out of imagery conceived by Vedic sages to explain creation. This book for the first time investigates into the meaning of this convention. The author concentrates on its origins in Hindu art and on preceding textual references to the phenomenon of multiplicity. The first part establishes a general definition for the convention. Examination of all Brahmanical literature up to, and sometimes beyond, the 1st - 3rd century A.D., adds more information to this basic definition. The second part applies this literary information mainly to icons of the Yaksa, Siva, Vasudeva-Kr?sn?a and the Goddess, and indicates how Brahmanical cultural norms, exemplified in Mathura, can transmit textual symbols. Both Part I and Part II provide iconic modules and a methodology to generate interpretations for icons with this remarkable feature through the Gupta age.
