Second edition, adding a chapter with an additional case study, and only Plantin edition of an important collection of medical case studies and other medical observations by the great botanist Rembert Dodoens. Dodoens took many from his own medical practice and also edited and annotated examples by his predecessors: Taranta (d.…1418), Benivieni (published 1507) and Cornax (1507-1564). He also added his own hierarchical overview of physiology following Galenus. While several highly regarded scholars published collections of this sort, they are aimed largely at the general public and tend to present bizarre cases that hold the reader's attention. By writing in Latin Dodoens brought his book to an international educated public. Such works also try to demonstrate the value of classical Galenic medical theories, while using new observations to correct and expand them in areas where they had proved weak. This helped defend the status of the medical academic in a world where many healers practiced without academic training, whether experienced herbalists or outright charlatans. With contemporary owner's inscriptions. A few quires slightly browned, but the book is still in very good condition. The binding shows a few stains and most of the ties are lost, but it is still good.l BMN I, p. 184; Durling 1180; Voet 1094; USTC 422345; cf. Wellcome 1822. Contemporary reversed parchment (made from the lower part of a leaf from a 16th-century legal document in German, with a reference to Basel), sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints, with fore-edge flaps, remains of leather ties; green edges. With Plantin's woodcut compasses device on the title page and 3 woodcut decorated initials (2 series) plus 3 repeats. Set in roman types with incidental italic and occasional words in Greek. Pages: [16], 298, [6] pp.

Antverpiæ ( Antwerpen ) , ex Officina Plantiniana, apud Balthasarem et Ioannem Moretos, 1616, in-folio, 362 x 233 mm , engraved title page + (1)(bl) + (14) nn pp + 872 pp + (66) nn pp (index , printer's mark). With 1341 woodcuts of plants. Full calf, raised gilt spine, double gilt fillet on both covers (binding with some stains…and traces of use, lower headcap missing but still an excellent contemporary binding). With a 19th century manuscript ex-libris written in red ink above and underneath the engraved title ; ''Charles Bourqueney à Chatelblanc (Doubs , 1841)''. On the fly-leaf an older note stating that the book belongs to the ''Bibliothèque du petit Pré (?)''. Most of the engravings received an additional latin caption written in a neat 19th (?) century italic hand, in black ink, and referring to the linnaean plant name. Nissen BBI, 517; Hunt 201. This is the most complete Latin edition of Dodoens' '' Cruydtboeck." . He was the first of the great 16th c. Flemish botanists and made with his herbals an important contribution to the botanical classification system which had begun with Bock's "Neu Kreuterbuch" in 1539. The 1616 Latin edition is his last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from his earlier publications, and containing also an attempt to explain the different parts of the plants. This is a fine crisp copy with no browning inside and without use, thumbing or wear at any pages, which is a rare condition for such a much used book.

Ad 1: Posthumously published first edition of Rembert Dodoens's 127 Latin lectures on medicine, edited and extensively annotated by Sebastian Egbertsz. de Vrij. Dodoens (1517-1585), the greatest botanist of his age, was appointed professor of medicine at Leiden University in 1582 and delivered the present lectures in 1583 and 15…84. He never published them, but they were prepared for publication by his student Sebastian Egbertsz. de Vrij. Much of the material is, of course, of botanical and pharmacological as well as medical interest.Ad 2: Dodoens's description of 54 remarkable medical case studies from his forty years' experience as a physician, first published together with Dodoens's Historia vitis vinique in 1580 and issued separately in 1581. It originally contained 53 case studies, but Dodoens added one on palpitations in Plantin's 1585 edition. With contemporary and later inscriptions. Some quires in the appendices to the Medicinalium observationum are slightly browned, and a hole at the foot of its last leaf affects a few words in the index. Otherwise in good condition and only slightly trimmed.l Ad 1: Krivatsy 3300; STCN (5 copies); ad 2: Krivatsy 3299; STCN (5 copies). Pages: [8], 618, [7], [1 blank] pp. With: (2) DODOENS (DODONAEUS), Rembert. Medicinalium observationum exempla rara. .Harderwijk, widow of Thomas Henricksz.; Amsterdam, Hendrik Laurensz., "M.D.XXI" [with a C added in manuscript to correct it to 1621]. 8vo. 2 editions in 1 volume. Ad 1 with Tournay's woodcut device (Fortuna, with motto "spero fortunae regressum") on the title-page, a "woodcut" decorated initial (actually cast). Ad 2 with Laurensz.'s woodcut device on title-page (with motto "non odit tame", based on a 1614 emblem by Roemer Visscher), 1 woodcut tailpiece, 3 woodcut decorated initials (1 series) plus 3 repeats. Both books set in roman and italic types with incidental Greek. Contemporary vellum, sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints, with a hollow back, manuscript spine title, blue edges.

An official declaration signed by the great botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585), acknowledging financial and other documents received in his new capacity as churchwarden of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (now known as the old Pieterskerk) in his native Mechelen (Malines) in what is now Belgium. This was a hig…hly desirable post granted to him in 1558 addition to the post of city physician that he had held since 1548. He received seven receipts signed by Christiaen Verhayct for church property from the seven years 1542-1543 and 1547-1551. Also a signed, authenticated copy of a document of the foundation established in memory of Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), Archduchess of Austria and Savoy, who had been governor of the Habsburg Low Countries from 1507 to 1515 and from 1519 to her death in 1530. Further a 1538 inventory of the church's jewels, also made by Verhayct, and finally a document concerning the service drawn up by the sacristan in 1553. He received all of these documents from Catherine van Loon, widow of the deceased churchwarden Niclaes du Guesne. The document is written on one side of a quarter sheet of paper with no watermark in this quarter. With some old horizontal and vertical folds and with several small pin holes, but still in very good condition. A primary source for the life of the great botanist Rembert Dodoens.l For Dodoens: DSB III, pp. 138-139; Greene, Landmarks, 847-876; NBW (Belgium) 1, p. 419. A document written in dark brown ink on paper, signed by the great botanist Rembert Dodoens, with the opening words filled in afterwards in light brown ink and the signature in light brown ink. Pages: [1] ll.
