Dodoens's Florum, et Coronarium was devoted to flowers, ranging from herbaceous annuals and perennials to rare bulbous plants, that were traditionally used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to form garlands and wreaths, coronae; in fact, a garden planted with such flowers was sometimes referred to in this period as a "hortus coronarius." Among the flowers he describes are the rose, violet, lily, marguerite, marigold, amaranth, iris, narcissus, sunflower, anemone and carnation and sweet-smelling herbs such as thyme, marjoram, lavender and lavender cotton. Full Description: DODOENS, Rembert. A New Herball, or Historie of Plants. Wherein is contained the whole discourse and perfect description of all sorts of herbes and plants: their diuers and sundrie kindes: their names, natures, operations, & vertues: and that not onely of those which are heere growing in this our countrie of England but of al others also of forraine realms commonly vsed in physicke. First set foorth in the Dutch or Almaigne toong, by that learned D. Rembert Dodoens, phisition to the Emperor: and now first translated out of French into English, by Henrie Lyte Esquier. Corrected and Amended. London: Edm. Bollifant, 1595. Third edition. Octavo (7 x 5 1/4 inches; 180 x 135 mm). [40], 916, [48] pp. Translated by Henry Lyte from Charles de l'Écluse's 1557 French version of Dodoens's Cruydeboeck (Antwerp: 1554). Title-page within woodcut border. With woodcut head and tail-pieces and historiated initals. Contemporary full speckled calf. Boards ruled in blind. All edges red. Bound without front pastedown and rear endpapers. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on inside of front board. Early ink drawings and ownership notes on front free endpaper and verso of title-page. A few leaves in first and final gatherings and a few others including title-page reinforced with tissue at margins, bit with no loss of text. Leaves M3-M8 with closed tears, professionally repaired and with no loss of text. Some minor marginal dampstaining and soiling Still overall a very good copy. Dodoens (1517-1585) was the first of the great Flemish botanists, "and in both his Cruydeboeck, 1554, and his Stirpium Historia Pemptades Sex, 1583.he helped to forward the growing interest in classification which had begun to be evident as early as 1539 in Bock's Neu Kreuterbuch" (Hunt 67). The Cruydeboeck, his first botanical book, "was a national herbarium devoted to species indigenous to the Flemish provinces. The merit of this book was that rather than proceeding by alphabetical order, as Fuchs had done, Dodoens grouped the plants according to their properties and their reciprocal affinities" (D.S.B.). Henry Lyte prepared his English translation with care, comparing "the last Douch copy" of the Cruydeboeck with the French version, and making corrections and additions. "After Lyte had finished his work, Rembert Dodoens sent fresh material, which the English translator incorporated in A nievve herball. Lyte's own copy of de l'Écluse's version [Histoire des plantes] is now preserved in the British Library (Bloomsbury). It contains numerous notes in French and English, written in red and black ink, and in a neat, clear hand. References to Turner and de l'Obel are inserted, and the book is carefully annotated and corrected" (Henrey, p. 36). The English Dodoens provided English literature with source material of great importance, as there were few books in English at the time purely devoted to plants. As Anderson (An Illustrated History of the Herbals, p. 178) remarks, the Lyte translation "may well have supplied Shakespeare with much of the plant lore used in his plays." ESTC S109768. Belg. Italic letter, little Roman. Woodcut printer's device to titles, 140 + 79 full-page woodcut plants and herbs, decorated initials and ornaments. First title strengthened at gutter, couple of tiny worm holes at blank foot of first few gatherings, generally light browning, i6 a bit ink marked, tiny repair to upper edge of A8. A good copy in later vellum, spine gilt-lettered, late C17 autograph 'Carolus Olivetanus' (Charles Olivétan?) to verso of first title. First edition of this lavishly illustrated pocket manual for physicians and botanists - one of the many superbly illustrated works produced by the Plantin press in Antwerp. Rembert Dodoens (or Dodonaeus, 1517-85) was a Flemish botanist, court physician to the Emperors Maximilian II and Rudolph II, and professor of medicine at Leiden. He is most renowned for his works on herbs and their medicinal properties published in Dutch, French, English and Latin, inspired by the contemporary writings of Leonhart Fuchs and, ultimately, by Dioscorides's 'De materia medica'. Dedicated to Philip II of Spain, the present is a study of plants and herbs traditionally used to purge and cleanse the body. For each of the over 100 plants discussed, he provides at least one handsome full-page woodcut. These woodcuts were produced by Peter vander Borcht, under the careful supervision of the botanist Charles L'Écluse, and were not originally intended for this work (Kusukawa, p.94). The text accompanying each woodcut includes a short description of the plant's appearance, fruit, alternative names in various languages, habitat, smell, taste (e.g., Coriandrus has a 'sour and pungent bitterness' to it) and the most effective treatments that can be drawn from it, such as oils, liquors, teas and balms. Among the plants are the cyclamen, many types of valerian, bluebell, liquorice, poppy, sassafras and tarragon. Issued with the first work, the 'appendix' depicts over 40 rare herbs and plants, with new woodcuts, never previously seen. The preface provides Dodoens' interesting observations on the process and quality of the illustrations ('icones') in the previous book, as well as others, as well as the importance of images in herbals. He also specifies botanic gardens where he found specimens he could copy, in Brussels and Antwerp. As always, Dodoens provides general information and at least one woodcut for each, among them being the 'Iris Tuboerosa', thistle, absinth, and the Moluccas (named after the islands whence they probably originated). 'Included are chapters on 'Hyoscyamus Peruvianus' (tobacco) & 'Zarsae Parillae' (sarsaparilla), also designated as Peruvian' (Alden). A most interesting, very handsome herbal. USTC 401609; Belg. Typ. 961; Pettegree & Walsby 9961; Durling 1181; Thesaurus literaturae botanicae, p.378; Alden 574/16. Not in Wellcome, Heirs of Hippocrates or Osler. S. In den WarenkorbSecond edition, adding a chapter with an additional case study, and only Plantin edition of an important collection of medical case studies and other medical observations by the great botanist Rembert Dodoens. Dodoens took many from his own medical practice and also edited and annotated examples by his predecessors: Taranta (d. 1418), Benivieni (published 1507) and Cornax (1507-1564). He also added his own hierarchical overview of physiology following Galenus. While several highly regarded scholars published collections of this sort, they are aimed largely at the general public and tend to present bizarre cases that hold the reader's attention. By writing in Latin Dodoens brought his book to an international educated public. Such works also try to demonstrate the value of classical Galenic medical theories, while using new observations to correct and expand them in areas where they had proved weak. This helped defend the status of the medical academic in a world where many healers practiced without academic training, whether experienced herbalists or outright charlatans. With contemporary owner's inscriptions.
