There is a heated debate from the d…ay the Indus or the Harappan civilization was discovered: whether it was Aryan or Dravidian. The flow of the new data is continuous and the controversy is becoming acrimonious. It appears that a Tsumani-like calamity forced Harappans to migrate to other regions in the country for sustenance and even beyond it. The problem that has now cropped up is whether the Harappans and Aryans were two different people or one and the same for the simple reason that the latter reach the very same regions where the Harappan presence is also marked, the former evidenced by Harappan artifacts and the latter by an IA language because Max Muller has certified that whosoever speaks an IA language is an Aryan. This was not a hide-and-seek game, but points to their being one and the same people. What is more, these migrations are corroborated by allusions in the later Vedic literature. The study analyses all the new evidence and shows how it has contributed to the make up of Indian civilization and discusses how it can prove useful to bridge the hiatus between the protohistoric and the historical periods.

Index. The Satavahanas (Ca. second cent. BC second cent. AD) were one of the empire builders in ancient India. Their rule extended almos…t over the entire region south of the Vindhyas and their reign is marked by considerable peace and prosperity which was due to the flourishing trade with the Roman empire. The artistic creations of the Satavahana era are among the grandest in India comparable in their monumental quality to such imposing buildings as the Khajuraho and Chola temples. They are unsurpassed in early India and many of them are still standing in their pristine glory. Yet he Satavahana art is not treated as an independent school. The present study is aimed at delineating the characteristic features more particularly of its regional varieties such as Western India Central India and the Southern Deccan. The Satavahana art includes such imposing edifices as the early Buddhist rock cut caves of Western India the gateways at Sanchi and the sculpture of the Mahastupa at Amaravati the magnificent paintings in the Hinayana group at Ajanta besides beautiful terracottas bronzes and ivories. Ganesa is probably the mos…t popular god in India among the Hindus and was accepted by the Buddhist and Jaina as also by the Tantrics. His very therianthropic form evokes curiosity and many attempts have been made to explain it on the basis of literary testimony which, however, is a later fabrication. Relevant archaeological testimony, however, was largely ignored. But it should be emphasized that only archaeology offers reliable data which has been employed here for the first time. It very convincingly explains the rise of the elephant-headed divinity from a sacred animal and an animal totem to the exalted position of a cult deity in Hindu pantheon. This long journey of the god from gaja to gana to Ganesa to Maha-Ganesa and a cult deity, as great as Siva and Vishnu, is truly amazing. His popularity in a large measure is due to his being a vighna-karta (obstacle-creator) changing into a vighna-harta (obstacle-remover), when properly propitiated. Wherever Indians went and settled, they took Ganesa with them for removing obstacles, and therefore Ganesa is the only divinity who can truly be called the God of Asia.
