"Mauchline lies in the foothills of the western slopes of the Southern Uplands, 16km east of Ayr and 13km south of Kilmarnock. Mauchline was the administrative centre of the r…egality of Kylesmuir, granted in the twelfth century to Melrose Abbey. It was erected as a burgh of barony in 1510 and a burgh of regality in 1707. The town was noted for its trade in livestock and, in the nineteenth century, for textile manufacture, the leather industry, and the manufacture of wooden snuff and souvenir boxes. The close association of Mauchline and the poet Robert Burns generated a tourist industry, helped after 1850 with the arrival of rail transport. This book is part of the Scottish Burgh Survey - a series designed to identify the archaeological potential of Scotland's historic towns.".

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. 2006. x, 54pp. Folding broadsheet to rear pocket. B&W illustrations. No inscriptions. Excellent condition. "Charts the developemt of the historic town of Kilsyth from the scatter of ferm touns in the area in the late 1500s, through to the elevation of Kilsyth to a burgh of barony in… 1620 and the subsequent expansion of the 'new town', serving as a market and a centre of the textile industry. Part of the Scottish Burgh Survey - a series designed to identify the archaeological potential of Scotland's historic towns. This survey provides an accessible and broad-ranging synthesis of existing knowledge on historic Kilsyth, as well as offers conservation guidance for future development. The historic town of Kilsyth is situated in the Kelvin valley in North Lanarkshire - beside the old road between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It developed from a small medieval town set between its castle and parish church to become a burgh of barony in 1620. Its many historic buildings and ruins tell of its colourful history, including the destruction of its castle by Oliver Cromwell in 1650. It later expanded in the industrial period, becoming a centre of the textile industry, and later with the construction of the Forth and Clyde canal it was important for coal mining and quarrying.".

"The story of Aberdeen is a tale of two historic burghs, Old and New Aberdeen, which developed in very different ways. Old Aberdeen was e…stablished as a bishopric in 1125/1130 and its influences were ecclesiastical and academic. New Aberdeen, on the other hand, grew because of its importance as a market and trading centre, having been granted the status of a king's burgh in the twelfth century. Over the last twenty years, archaeologists in the city of Aberdeen have excavated some of the best-preserved evidence for past life in Scotland's historic burghs. Historic Aberdeen describes the parallel history, archaeology and physical evolution of Old and New Aberdeen, and explores what further archaeological evidence of the city's historic past might survive beneath the streets, buildings and open spaces of present-day Aberdeen. This book is part of the Scottish burgh survey-a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.".

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1997. ix, 103pp. Author Pat Dennison's own copy with her signature to the top of the title page. Rubbing to spine. Minor wear and light soiling to covers. The book is otherwise in very good condition. B&W images, maps and plans throughout. Folding colour map to rear. "Nairn has had…many roles through time: from a small medieval burgh with its burgage plots and associated castle; to a small seventeenth-century town which could not meet its taxation dues; to an early eighteenth-century garrison town beset with billeted troops; and emerging in the nineteenth century as one of the premier resorts of Scotland. The classic burgh plan of medieval Nairn is still visible today; but was this the original 'Invernairn'? Some clues suggest that twelfth-century Nairn became inundated with water and was forced to relocate to a more protected site in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. This book is part of the Scottish burgh survey-a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.". SIGNED COPY.

"North Queensferry owes its existence to the ferries which provided transport across the Forth. Throughout the middle ages most of the inhabitants were involved in manning the ferry crossing and providing accommodation and sustenance to travellers. In the eighteenth century various industries were established including two quarries, a chemical works and a brickworks. The 'Queen Margaret', the first steam ferry boat on the Forth, was launched in 1821, the Forth Rail Bridge was opened in 1890, and by the end of the century, the village was a favourite resort for 'sea-bathing', rowing regattas and golf. Forfar…was an important residence of early Scottish kings, and may have received burgh status as early as the reign of David I (1124-53). In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Forfar remained a small market town. The growth of the textile industry in the latter part of the eighteenth century saw the town begin to expand until, by the nineteenth century, it was a major linen-producing centre. In this volume the history and archaeology of the town are described, as are its historic buildings, and the origins of its street names.".

Otherwise in excellent condition with no inscriptions. "A wide-ranging history of Scotland's towns from their earliest foundations to the turn of the twenty-first century. This pi…oneering book tells the story of urban development in Scotland over the course of a millennium, drawing on original research into more than thirty towns, from the smallest settlements to major cities. The changes in urban society came at different times and at different paces for most towns and many had to withstand crisis after crisis. The overall evolution of urban life, in its different guises, is explored throughout the book. Beautifully illustrated and blending archaeological, cartographic and geographic resources, the study also examines the lives of people who lived in Scotland s towns and cities to give the reader a vivid impression of the times and a clear understanding of how these urban developments came to be. The book also considers urban heritage and asks what we have lost and may continue to lose through neglect and fragmentation.".

"This volume, the earlier of the two-volume official History of Aberdeen, provides a comprehensive picture of the development of the two historic burghs of Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen over their first seven centuries, from 1100 to 1800. As early as the 14th century, Aberdeen was recognized as one of the "four great towns of Scotland". Early settlement, the growing townscape and social change over the centuries are all traced. Aberdeen's contacts with the sea and other towns overseas and its economy and politics, both local and national, are assessed.".
