The historic town of Kilsyth is situated in the Kelvin valley in North Lanarkshire - beside the old road between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Its many historic buildings and ruins tell of its colourful history, including the destruction of its castle by Oliver Cromwell in 1650. It later expanded in the industrial period, becoming a centre of the textile industry, and later with the construction of the Forth and Clyde canal it was important for coal mining and quarrying.".

"North Queensferry owes its existence to the ferries which provided transport across the Forth. Throughout the middle ages most of the inhabitants were involved in manning the ferry crossing and providing accommodation and sustenance to travellers. In the eighteenth century various industries were established including two quarries, a chemical works and a brickworks. The 'Queen Margaret', the first steam ferry boat on the Forth, was launched in 1821, the Forth Rail Bridge was opened in 1890, and by the end of the century, the village was a favourite resort for 'sea-bathing', rowing regattas and golf.
