The Tonkin expedition is a continuation of French military operations carried out under the Third Republic and resulting in the Sino-French War. . At the birth of the Third Republic, France already had taken Indochina, by the Treaty of 1862 with the Emperor Tu Duc, three southern provinces of the current Vietnam that form the French Cochin China, and also benefits from the opening three ports of Annam to French commerce. . The aspirations of the republic in the region were driven by traders seeking opportunities in the Far East, and those who dream of competing with the British Empire, now in India, with the Mekong that would open Laos, Burma and China to French commerce. The French aspirations up the Mekong river disappointed these efforts because the Mekong was impassable by boat. The exploration of the Mekong river by the geographical expedition of Francis Garnier and Ernest Doudart de Lagrée in 1866-1868, ended in their death and failure. French efforts were transferred to the Red River in Tonkin, which opened an outlet and shipping to China.
