Vol. 2 from a set of 4, bound in green cloth with pattern of curled leaves on front, spine and as back vignette; gilt titles and highlights of design. Binding designed by Talwin Morris in Arts & Crafts style. Edges and spine rubbed, corners bumped, front flyleaf torn. Coloured frontispiece and 7 out of 18 full page plates have been removed; binding otherwise sound and overall in Fair / Good condition. Internally, foxing to end-papers; text pages clean , with only occasional marks. One of a 4-volume set giving an overview of the practical, economic and relationship framework of middle-class life c1900, with detailed information on a variety of topics. This volume covers the hiring of servants and their duties once hired; food purchasing, cookery and entertaining; and food production in the dairy, poultry yard and dressmaking and embroidery; exercise and health; the rearing of poultry; careers for young people. Each topic is illustrated with line drawings and full page plates, some taken from photographs (7 of these have been removed). There are some charming Art Nouveau styled designs for menu cards for different months of the year. The range of topics covered suggests the variety and complexity of the tasks that were involved in 'household management', especially in isolated areas. On the other hand, there is a lengthy section on 'household economy' and on the benefits of living in a modern flat and doing one's own housework. The work was republished in a 4-volume edition c1905, then a revised and updated version in 1909. This undated work (believed to be circa 1905) gives a detailed picture of a society on the cusp of great change, with new developments in aesthetics, health and technology co-existing with hierarchical social relationships.
