Original University of Pennsylvania Medical Diploma awarded to Carpenter Wendler, beautifully engrossed in Latin and issued by the Faculty of Medicine of the College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia during the antebellum era. This large-format vellum diploma features exceptionally elaborate engraved and manuscript calligraphy, the recipient's name prominently rendered at center, and retains its original blue silk ribbon. The document bears the signatures of several distinguished figures in nineteenth-century American medicine, including Provost William Darrach (1770-1841), noted Philadelphia physician and educational leader; David Gilbert, Professor of Surgery; pioneering gynecological surgeon Washington L. Atlee (1808-1878); John Wiltbank, Professor of Obstetrics; and Henry S. Patterson, Registrar. Issued decades before the Civil War by one of America's oldest and most prestigious medical schools, the diploma represents an outstanding example of early American medical and educational history, combining strong visual appeal, important institutional provenance, and a distinguished roster of faculty signatories. A scarce and highly displayable nineteenth-century medical diploma from the formative years of American medical education. Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW shelf). 1412915. Special Collections - Upstairs. Signed.
