Bibliography. Glossary. Some fishes of common uses by Tani tribes. From the preface This book titled Indigenous Knowledge and Policy Issues in Fisheries is focused on three major tribes such as Adi Galo and Nyishi of a frontier state called Arunachal Pradesh. This is a maiden attempt no only to understand the various intricate issues related to fisheries but also to document the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) of the three tribes of Arunachal Pradesh who are passing through the phase of transition. The original or natural habitats are still maintained which provides enormous scope to explore the IKS of these tribes in relation to biodiversity as well as cultural diversity in general and fisheries in general. It is an attempt to document traditional knowledge related to fish and conservation value providing many photographs related to IKS. It is hoped that this compilation will provide new information on the indigenous knowledge systems including fishing methods post harvest processing and local fish biodiversity conservation policies developed by the tribal community of the Arunachal Pradesh. This book will be highly useful to the students researchers fishery and biodiversity resource managers ethnobiologists ecologists and agencies involved in preservation and promotion of traditional knowledge for the larger benefit of the society. 96 pp.

Many diseases affecting present day aquaculture is resultant of intensification of culture practices without the basic perception of intricate balance between host pathogen and environment. Many time disease outbreaks in fish and prawn are closely linked to environmental deterioration and stress associated with intensification of culture practices. Different stress factors such as inadequate physico chemical and microbial quality of culture water poor nutritional status and high stocking density can cause infection by opportunistic pathogens. Moreover unprecedented movement of aquaculture seed and brood stock between regions has made the intrinsic pathogen to activate and produce disease in host and other stressful conditions affecting the native fish stocks. The entitled book Disease Management in Freshwater Pisciculture spread over 28 chapters covers the complete picture on fish and prawn disease scenario in the country with particular reference to the latest developments made in the aquatic animal health management sector. The detail etiology clinical signs prophylaxis and treatment of diseases have been discussed in a simplified manner for easy understanding of researchers teachers trainers and students in the field. Since it is not possible to describe the disease in detail this book will guide to identify and manage the disease including some aspects of latest developments in fish disease research. A comprehensive approach has been made to cover all the progressive areas of health management starting from basic status of diseases towards various approaches to diagnose prevent and control disease conditions. Few chapters have also been incorporated to understand the immune system of fish and prawn and also how do they work. The recent approach to prevent or control fish or prawn diseases through immunostimulation has also been included. 288 pp.

Discourses on social exclusion discrimination and inequality have emerged as defining characteristics of the 21st century social sciences. Tribes of India are subjected to various forms of exclusion and discrimination. Tribes living in the midst of castes encounter even more deeply embedded exclusion and deprivation. Based on fieldwork 24 in depth village studies elucidate these issues in terms of collapse of livelihood opportunities and multiple practices of discrimination and denial rooted in economic social and ritual spheres in this volume. In order to clarify concurrently intra-tribe, inter-tribe as also tribe-caste discrepancy, tribes are studied in numerous locations in rural India, including plains hills and islands. Articles in this volume explain how the tribes people have steadily resisted the persistent repression and adopted strategies to defy ill treatment. Affirmative action programmes strengthening of statutory councils and electoral politics diffusion of secular values and democratization processes have all facilitated tribes people to show determination and fight for their rights. The rising trend of Adivasi awakening is a defining characteristic of contemporary India. Tribes people are no longer silent spectators of coercion. (jacket).

New awakening and resistance among the tribes people is increasingly aimed at livelihood rights, rights for dignity and recognition of selfhood. Most articles in this volume focus on the rights discourse and elucidate legitimate rights claims of the tribes people. Resistance, as a form of struggle is the principal theme of this volume eminent scholars such as Felix Padel, Walter Fernandes, Udayon Misra, Daniel J. Rycroft, Asoka Kumar Sen, Binay Kumar Pattnaik, Lidia Guzy, Jagannath Dash and others have critically dealt with such struggles as the Santal insurrection and ho protests in the colonial era, claims of self-determination and self-management of the resources, environmental movement, Adivasi resistance in the Niyamgiri Hills Naxalism/Maoism, industrial encroachments, land alienation dispossession and disempowerment. Also examined are statuses of constitutional safeguards and the Forest Rights Act. The north-east scenario is portrayed in terms of issues of tribal homelands, representative democracy, marginalization, exclusion and increasing dissent among minority tribes, abuse of land/forest rights, illegal logging and discourse on indigeneity. This volume will be of immense significance to all social scientists, and particularly to social anthropologists, sociologists, historians and political scientists. (jacket).
