Please tell Julia that I will send her 'Moore's Works' so soon as I get them home; — I loaned them some six weeks ago to a friend & they have not yet been returned, hence the delay in sending. When do you go to the Country, if you have no objections, to tell me, I should be pleased to know. As ever your friend J. P. Cresson P.S. Kind remembrances to all at home. J." HISTORICAL CONTEXT & SIGNIFICANCE: The author, J.P. Cresson, belonged to the Cresson family, a highly prominent and wealthy Philadelphia Quaker merchant family with deep roots in the city. Because the family was affluent, educated, and heavily involved in philanthropy, literature, and commerce, this letter provides a perfect window into the rapid consumption of new literature among the American elite. Casually gifting a friend a copy of the brand-new "Pickwick Papers" or loaning out Thomas Moore's romantic poetry was a hallmark of their sophisticated social circle. The recipient, addressed as "Benjamine," was almost certainly Benjamin Franklin Cresson, or a closely related cousin within the same prominent merchant circle. It was customary in Quaker families of this era to pass letters and literature back and forth between family branches, particularly when traveling "to the Country." In this case, escaping "to the Country" refers to the common practice among affluent Philadelphians of fleeing the oppressive summer heat and humidity of the city for rural Pennsylvania or New Jersey estates—a detail perfectly aligned with the letter's August 1st date. The timing of this letter is critical to its importance. Charles Dickens's "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club" was issued in London in monthly parts from April 1836 to November 1837. In Philadelphia, the publishing firm Carey, Lea & Blanchard began rushing pirated American part-issues to the public as quickly as ships could cross the Atlantic, igniting "Pickwick-mania" across the United States throughout the spring and summer of 1837. Letters from the summer of 1837 directly discussing and circulating copies of "Pickwick Papers" among private American readers are extraordinarily scarce. This piece provides vivid, primary evidence of early American literary reception, Victorian summer reading habits, and the physical circulation of popular fiction among the Philadelphia Quaker elite.
