Adams Sitney describing "Structural film", a term he coined. Sitney identified the formal characteristics common in Structural films as fixed camera position, flicker effect, and loop printing ("the immediate repition of shots"). Among the other contents of this issue are interviews with George Landow and Bruce Baillie. There are articles on Stan Brakhage's "Mothlight with verse by Robert Creeley, on Rossellini's "The Rise to Power of Louis XIV" by Ken Kelman and on World War Two and American film by Lewis Jacobs. Original publisher's coarse-weave oatmeal cloth as issued. An excellent presentation copy - to Robert Duncan and Jess - of William Katz's assemblage of rubberstamps by various poets and POP artists. From the edition limited to 225 numbered copies with each print signed by the artist (the Warhol and Red Grooms prints with stamp signatures as issued); only the first 110 copies were for sale, available through Multiples, Inc. The presentation is in pencil to the front free endpaper: 'for Robert and Jess / With our love, / Bob [Creeley] / and In Friendship / Bill (Katz) / 3 Jan '72'. Robert Indiana, an instructor whom Katz met at college, offered him space in which to work, thus Indianakatz became the imprint of this book. Complete run of the legendary Loujon Press magazine so profusely signed it seems like an avant-garde poetry yearbook with an additional mockup of the last issue and an ALS from Bukowski to the Loujon Press editors. The Outsider was first run out of the Webb's apartment in New Orleans and later at their place in Tuscon. Ornately designed and letterpressed, the installments are themselves audacious art objects produced in small runs. The first volume is signed and inscribed by publisher Gypsy Lou Webb on the front tissue-guard and is additionally signed by Bukowski on the first page and a number of authors at their contributions: Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Amiri Baraka, Michael McClure, Robert Creeley, Gene Frumkin, John Ashbery, and Diane di Prima. The second volume is also signed by Gypsy Lou plus Anselm Hollo and Gene Frumkin. Volume 3 also signed by Gypsy Lou plus Robert Creeley, Michael McClure, and Anselm Hollo.
