Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Week We Saw Jesus recounts Holy Week through the eyes of children who the book presents as having been there to see it. Through rhyming and easily understood words, readers can experience the excitement of the week that begins with Jesus's arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. They follow along as crowds rejoice, sinister plans develop, and Jesus ministers to many while the events of Easter come to life through vivid illustrations. The story is designed to help children understand Jesus on their level, leaving them with a desire to know more. Parents, grandparents, church staff, and volunteers will find this a useful way to build excitement and curiosity for the Easter season. The characters, and through them the readers, witness Palm Sunday, the cleansing of the temple, the Last Supper, the betrayal, the passion narrative, and, of course, the resurrection, as well as allusions to walking on water and the resurrection of Lazarus. The story strikes a balance between biblical accuracy and child-friendly content through a child narrator who meets Jesus as a stranger and grows to like him. A child's voice can provide truths more naturally than an adult, and, through that voice, the story displays no blood or gore yet reveals biblical events truthfully. In step with the narrator, readers can grow to feel they know Jesus better, understand the excitement of his arrival, appreciate the sadness of his death, and rejoice when they discover the miracle of Easter. An interesting work believed to be a revised version of "The Devil's Thoughts" (1799) but later revised with a letter appearing in the February 14th edition of the Morning Post (1830) with the claim by one R. C. Porson that the poem, "The Devil's Walk," had been actually written by his deceased uncle "Professor Porson".(2)_ The Devil's Progress, pp67 with engraved b/w frontis plus 4 full page b/w engravings and two vignettes designed by R. Seymour and engraved by Evans and Welch. This being another satire expanded from "The Devil's Thoughts" . Bailey, 116 Chancery lane". 12mo although the poetry pieces are a smaller size paper. Inside hand written title page to history of the devil at beginning of book and old catalogue entry for "the devil's walk" to front pastedown. There is a little foxing and toning throughout but generally all pages in very good condition for their age in a tight solid binding. A very interesting item. Scarce. More photos on request. He is unacquainted with Shettle's books, none of which are credited to him in Crockford's. He agrees with Lang's 'letter & notes on Church & Education matters': 'the War is constantly disclosing how far astray our Education & Church method has been. No high spiritual ideals have been fully & widely recognised in our schools & our churches have been used too often as nurseries of narrow & pedantic theology or as political hotbeds'. William Robert Lang, the probable recipient, was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow. He became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto and took an active part in the First World War. Inscribed on the front wrapper by Associate Justice Thomas: "To the Women's Club of Elmwood Place - With best wishes! Clarence Thomas." In Harper v. Virginia Department of Taxation in 1993, the Supreme Court ruled that new federal rules announced by the Court must apply retroactively to cases still open on direct review. The case involved Virginia taxpayers who sought refunds after the Court held that states could not tax federal retirement benefits while exempting state retirement benefits. Virginia courts refused to apply that earlier ruling retroactively. The decision reversed the Virginia Supreme Court and became an important case on retroactivity in civil constitutional litigation. Signed by Clarence Thomas, the Supreme Court decision in United States v. Virginia Department of Taxation. The majority decision was written by Thomas. (illustrator). Signed.…

Very good.RARE.The first Japanese national to be called to the English Bar, Goronosuke Yoshiyama (c.1846-1882) was called to the Bar on June 6, 1871 and admitted to Lincoln's Inn on November 11, 1871. Funded by the Japanese government, he had arrived in England in 1868 to study English law and its constitution. Unable to become a member of Cambridge University due to his lack of knowledge of Latin and Greek, he stayed to attend lectures on international and English law and constitutional history. Determined to succeed, Yoshiyama hired as a tutor Thomas Waraker, a member of Lincoln's Inn who lectured on law at Trinity Hall. He returned to Japan to become head of foreign affairs at the Ministry of Justice and subsequently transferred to Osaka as a judge, presiding over 251 cases in 3 years. Yoshiyama concluded his career as a judge in Japan's Supreme Court of Judicature, dying at the young age of 36 in 1882.The XII Lord of the House of Marcoartu, Arturo de Marcoartu (1829-1904) was a Spanish pacifist, engineer and Senator. Signed above as a "Deputy to the Cortes" (the Cortes Generales being the Spanish Parliament), he utilized his connections within the British legal network to lobby for a unified international system of justice. Involved in the international arbitration and peace movement in London in the 1870's, he frequently interacted with the legal minds of Lincoln's Inn where both Yoshiyama & Webster practiced. De Marcoartu was the first Spanish Nominee for a Nobel Prize, the Nobel Peace Prize in his case. The English barrister Thomas Webster (1810-1875) was known for his involvement in patent legislation. He became secretary to the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1837, resigning in 1839 though remaining as the institution's honorary secretary until he was called to the Bat at Lincoln's Inn in 1841. Webster played a major role in reforming patent law through the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852. A member of the governing body of the Society of Arts, he was chairman at the meeting of the Society when the proposal of holding the Internnational Exhibition of 1851 was made. Webster was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1865.The English financial administrator, railroad executive and legal figure William Lawrence Banks worked closely with public committees and international delegates in London.…

In den Warenkorb1-1/2 pp., fair copy in a contemporary secretarial hand, on the first leaf of bifolium; docketed on verso of 2nd leaf "The Previous Questions of the Ct. Martial". 1 vols. Folio. Remarkable record of a critical moment in the early career of one of the Britain's most famous naval officers, Sir Thomas Graves (1725-1802), who subsequently served as Governor of Newfoundland from 1761-1764, and, during the American Revolution, received much of the blame for the failure to relieve Cornwallis at Yorktown. In this 1757 Court Martial before the High Court of Admiralty, Graves was held accountable for his actions in the Channel as Captain of the Sheerness. "On 14 December 1756 off Ushant, Graves discovered six ships to windward of him and he sailed down to them and tacked across the squadron several times in order to ascertain their exact strength and destination. The precise detail he sent to the Admiralty was warmly approved by the board. The warmth of this approbation was diminished when, on the night of 26 December 1756, Graves saw another vessel which he judged also to be a French ship of the line, possibly separated from those seen earlier; because of the disparity in size he did not attempt to engage her. An Admiralty inquiry, deciding the ship was a French East-Indiaman and that Graves should have engaged, ordered his court martial." (ODNB). As this document records, Graves was sentenced to be publicly reprimanded for an error of judgment; but his career did not appear to suffer from it.
