Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Second Edition, revised. Fine-looking set of three hardcover volumes, remarkably handsome of exterior, still bright interiors, clean and unmarked. Translated from the French, with Notes and Illustrations, being the Second Edition, revised, with 40 engraved collotypic plates. Bookplates of George Gunning Horton inside each front flap, that of F.E. Sotheby on first free endpaper. Beginning separation of front joint front edges to Volume I, II, Volume III still with solid edges; all three backstrips having been reincorporated into new contemporary diced calf bindings, with gold trim to the boards, raised bands and gilt titles and volume numbers to the spine. Marbled page edges all-round. The Memoirs of Count Grammont recounts the court of Charles II during 1662-1664, and critics then and historians now marvel at how well written it is. Here is an Extract: ?As those who read only for amusement are, in my opinion, more worthy of attention than those who open a book merely to find fault, to the former I address myself, and for their entertainment commit the following pages to press, without being in the least concerned about the severe criticisms of the latter. I further declare, that the order of time and disposition of the facts, which give more trouble to the writer than pleasure to the reader, shall not much embarrass me in these Memoirs. It being my design to convey a just idea of my hero, those circumstances which most tend to illustrate and distinguish his character shall find a place in these fragments just as they present themselves to my imagination, without paying any particular attention to their arrangement.? Collated as complete, paginated thusly: Volume I: [3], vi-xi, [2], 2-378; Volume II: [1], 2-304; Volume III: [3], 2-284 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
