Elmer Lawrence Corthell (1840-1916), a civil engi…neer, was active as a consulting engineer on railway, bridge, hydroelectric, irrigation, jetty, levee, and other projects in the U.S., Latin America and Europe. He had an office in New York City from the 1870s until 1916. He was the author of A History of the Jetties at the Mouth of the Mississippi River. Scarce: OCLC shows only one copy though without naming the institution. OCLC: 36241986 Removed from a larger volume, spine shellacked, else a very good copy, author's compliments tipped into title, contents and diagrams lightly soiled, faint fold.

Tissue-guarded frontispiece, full-page plates, 10 foldout maps, marbled endpapers. Very good. Faintest wear to calf; small hand-lettered shelf label near foot of spine.…Quite handsome first edition -- and a superb presentation copy, with "Hon. Wm. B. Allison" giltstamped at center of front board and bearing a large and lengthy signed inscription on inner flyleaf: "Presented to the Honorable / Wm B. Allison / by his friend / Jas. B. Eads / in grateful remembrance of / the fact that he was one / of the earliest and truest / friends of the Jetties. / Washington D.C. / Feb. 1881." James B. Eads (1820-87) -- a steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of him is this book's frontispiece -- was a legendary civil engineer and prolific inventor who designed the first rail and road bridge to span the Mississippi River in St. Louis and whose jetties (which succeeded in narrowing and deepening the Mississippi River, making it more navigable) are the subject of this study. Recipient William B. Allison (1829-1908) was the powerful Iowa Republican who, as U.S. senator from that state (1873-1908), was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years, he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. The support of this senator whose state holds a long Mississippi River border would have been crucial in getting government approval for this massive project. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics," Allison owned "hundreds of books on government, economics, history, banking, finance, and the tariff [as well as] volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader, Allison doubtless read most of these volumes, if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation." Quite a choice copy. Signed.
