In den WarenkorbProctor was a much loved individual in literary circles, from the days of the London Magazine to the mid-Victorian period, in which he was the dedicatee of both Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair' and Wilkie Collins's 'Woman in White'. His reputation as a poet was international: he was thought highly of by Pushkin. 1p, 12mo. In good condi…tion, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to blank reverse. The letter reads: 'Dear [Harris?] | Pray tell me where [?] I can have some conversation with you about some patients of the name of [Lealer? Lester?], whom you know. If an interview be difficult, then you will perhaps tell me what you know about them (their Conduct I mean) particularly about Miss Anne [Lealer? Lester?]' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The first edition of this book was also published in 1820 it was greetd with come warmth by Lord Jeffrey in the Edinburgh Review, January, 1820 - " There is a great deal of the diction of Wordsworth and Coleridge, and some imitation of their beauties ; but we think the natural bent if his genius is more like that of Leigh Hunt than any other author . We hope that this is not to be our last meeting with Mr. Cornwall. " Brian Waller Procter ( 1787 - 1874 ) . He was a lawyer and was called to the Bar as a Member of Gray's Inn, 1831, and Commissioner in Lunacy for thirty years. He also published a number of poetical works which were quite popular at the time. All his publications were issued under the pseudonym Bryan Waller Procter. For more details of Procter see ODNB.

Procter writes to Mr Harrison, not further identified but presumably a post-master in Ryde, to enquire after the current status of an errant letter. Although 'of no consequen…ce', and not requiring an answer, Procter is keen that it does not 'come before the authorities of 'The Dead Letter Office' for their criticism'. He asks, therefore, that Harrison 'intimate to Mr. Tennant, where this treasure [value twopence, as the pleaders say] is at this present moment lying hid'. Aware that this may be considered an imposition, Procter adds, 'If there be anything unpleasant in this,… or you have any scruples that stand in the way of you doing, what I am sure you will wish otherwise to do, I hope you will mention them without the least hesitation'. Should Atkinson decline the request, Procter assures him he will 'shake [him] by the hand quite as cordially as before'. Whether Atkinson accepted the honour, we have been unable to ascertain. Procter sends Talfourd his memoir of Edmund Kean, hoping for a favourable review, and believing him always to be 'very sincere'. His Life of Edmund Kean, published in 1835, was the first comprehensive biograp…hy of the great Shakespearean actor. Talfourd's thoughts on the work are not documented, but if they echoed those of the London Quarterly Review in July 1835 - 'a very worthless book' - Procter would have been truly disappointed. Signed 'BW Procter'. The note has been continued later in the day, with Procter asking Talfourd if they could 'club for a vehicle', as they are both invited to Macready's next Sunday. A businesslike letter from Procter to James Bertrand Payne, manager of the Moxon publishing house, in which he intimates dissatisfaction on the part of his friend John Forster with regards to the publication date of his [Pr…octer's] memoir of Charles Lamb. Procter has evidently conveyed information to Forster suggestive of Payne's uncertainty in the matter, but this surprises Forster, who is under the impression the matter has been settled. Procter tells Payne that Forster has asked to read Payne's letter on the subject, but Procter has judiciously 'declined to show it to him without [Payne's] permission', explaining that Payne would 'regret the tone' which he made use of in it. Forster was an interested party as he had helped Procter research the memoir. Procter intended to dedicate the work to Forster, but Payne declined to print Procter's appreciation in the published work, further eroding relations between the two men. A warm letter from Procter to Talfourd, thanking him for some friendly criticism of an unnamed work. Procter tells Talfourd, 'You must write a book some of these days & I mus…t turn critic in order to shake off if possible a portion of my heavy load of debt'. A clear admirer of Talfourd, Procter continues, 'the principal principal [sic] pleasure which I have felt since I turned scribbler has arisen from the criticism of such men as yourself whose high talent does not prevent them from being good natured towards poor authors'. In an additional note, written in the top-left corner, Procter advises that he's just received Talfourd's letter and will meet him for breakfast. In den Warenkorb2pp & 3pp 8vo, both letters clean & readable, lightly folded for posting. A fine pair of letters from Procter to the landowner and liberal politician Charles Tennant, 1796-1873. The earlier letter is of a personal nature, and indicative of a trusted friendship. It is augmented with a 14-line poem, 'A Word in Favour of Lady Hope'…, written out in full on the third page, and signed 'B Cornwall'. The poem, which as far as we can ascertain is unpublished, starts with the line 'Clouds light and high; clouds low, deep, dark, and cold'. At the end of the poem, preceding his pseudonymous signature, Procter has written 'done between Southampton & Winchester this bright 22nd of August 1846'. In the body of the letter Procter mentions this 'flywheel piece of verse' which he hopes will arrive safely. Elsewhere he writes of the difficulty in finding a house to buy in Ryde: 'I looked over half a dozen houses, but Ryde is so pretty that all good houses (i.e. good & cheap homes) have gone'. The second letter is slightly longer, and relates to matters of business. Procter thanks Tennant for his letter 'touching the Indian matter' and indicates he will 'thankfully avail [him]self of [his] kindness'. He goes on to discuss, in his capacity as a metropolitan commissioner for lunacy, the grounds on which the construction of an asylum might successfully be opposed. Procter informs Tennant that the role of the commission is to ensure the 'buildings, plans &c are proper for the lunatics - who are our charity', intimating that he is not privy to information that might be used as grounds for refusal. Procter advises that a theoretical argument against any given project, might be to query its location: 'If we knew that an asylum was about to be erected close to a manufacturing town we should probably say 'This will be detrimental to the health of the patients' - & at all events should raise the question in that way'. Tennant is evidently concerned about an asylum that is being constructed near Neath, but Procter assures him that he has 'no reason to fear its being injurious'.
