The scarce first edition of An Epitome of Universal History, small volume of world history for domestic and school education, written by educative scholar W. Jillard Hort. Published by Longman and Co. in 1822.In quarter calf, with blue pebbled boards. Contains an egraved frontispiece of a mother reading to her children by British draughtsman Henry Corbould.In this small volume, Hort sweeps through the first epochs, before entering both ancient and modern European history. While the work is chronological, the structure is split into various different Empires, states and civilizations, delving into Egyptians and Macedonians, as well as the different Italian states before finally finishing with America.Designed for parents teaching their children, the end of each chapter contains a list of knowledge questions for parents to test their children. Hort also wrote similar educational volumes for both geography and mythology. In quarter calf, with blue pebbled boards. Externally, Patches of fading and scratching to boards, with marble splitting from rear board. Rubbing to joints and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Slight edgewear, and fading to spine and joints. The odd spot and smudge mark to end papers. Internally, firmly bound, with minor wear to hinge between leaves pp.170-171. Pages are generally bright and clean, with slight age toning and small signs of browning to first and last leaves. Good. book.
