Signd by Colonel House on ffep, with dedication to Albert Bigelow Paine, "My friend tried and true, Cannes France 1926" A. B. Paine was the author of Mark Twain's biography, and many other books, a well-known literary figure of the period. Condition is VERY GOOD ; mild shelf wear, covers very clean with faint sunning. Spine sunned and toned with small closed tear at head. Binding tight and text bright and unmarked with dedication on ffep, along with the review of the book from the Paris Times, pasted above that. Letters. Stax.

18pp., 8vo. Disbound. With pink front wrap, carrying an engraved portrait of 'Colonel Ingersoll. The Great American Orator and Wit.'. In good condition, lightly aged. A report of a speech at Robinson's Opera House, Cincinnati. A prefatory note, titled 'Eloquence of Ingersoll', quotes from Samuel P. Putnam's 'Golden Throne'. Scarce: the only copies of any edition traced at Oxford (second edition) and the London School of Economics (edition not stated).

18pp., 8vo. Stapled and unbound. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with rusted staples. According to the title-page the library comprises 'Topographical and Genealogical Books, County Histories, including Nash's Worcestershire. Plot's Staffordshire. Dugdale's Warwickshire. Hutchins's Dorset. Whitelaw's Dublin. Berry's Genealogies. Publications of learned societies, etc.' In manuscript at head of title: 'MARKED CATALOGUE - PRICES REALISED'. Neatly priced throughout (but not named), with page totals carried forward and additional lots added in manuscript, both on the pages of the catalogue (for example, an extra eight lots on p.3) and in two pages of manuscript added at the end. The final printed lot in the catalogue is '206 etc. About 1,500 volumes of books in all classes of literature to be sold in convenient lots', with the manuscript note 'see attached lists'. The manuscript relots 206 with 206A to 206P, and adds lots 207 to 217A, giving a grand total of £555 12s 6d. Scarce: no copy on COPAC or WorldCat.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed, with red wax seal and postmark in red ink, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Captain Pack | Royal Fusiliers | Barbados'. The letter begins: 'My dear Captain Pack | I take the earliest opportunity of letting you that [sic] the Ship Herefordshire - a noble vessel - has been taken up to convey the 67 to Gibraltar, & the 66 & 72 from thence to the West Indies, proceeding afterwards with the Fusiliers & 19th Halifax'. Miller has 'not yet heard that [Pack's mother] Lady Elizabeth [Reynell] has returned to Avisford, but the application which I shall recommend her Ladyship to make to Lord FitzRoy [Somerset] about a Majority in a Colonial Cap[taincy], may as well precede the request I advise you making to The Commander in Chief [the Duke of Wellington] thro' His Lordship [Somerset] on that head stating your anxiety for promotion & [rest underlined] being prepared to join & serve with the Regt. The Exchange no doubt would be afterwards carried - The Herefordshire will proceed to Cork for the 67 on the 27 Inst.' Pack - a godson of the Duke of Wellington - was Lieut-Colonel of the 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fusiliers) and a Knight of the Legion of Honour. He was Wounded at Sebastopol, and was author of 'Sebastapol Trenches and Five Months in Them.'.
