La presente obra aborda el problema de los ámbitos de difusión y uso de la escritura en la Grecia arcaica entre el 750 y el 500 a.C., un periodo sobre el que tenemos muchas lagunas históricas, pero que es crucial para la formación de la identidad griega. Tradicionalmente se considera que la obra de Homero fue consignada por escrito ya a principios de este periodo y que a partir de ese momento se convirtió en referente cultural ineludible de todo el mundo griego, prácticamente hasta la toma de Constantinopla por los turcos en 1453. Sin embargo, frente a esta opinión, que determina ineludiblemente la visión que se tiene de la cultura de Grecia en estos siglos, hay cada vez más estudiosos que consideran que la Ilíada y la Odisea se escribieron por vez primera sólo en el siglo VI, probablemente durante el gobierno del tirano Pisístrato y sus hijos en Atenas. A estas tesis se suma el autor, que pasa revista para ello a distintos aspectos que tienen que ver directamente con esta cuestión, tales como los orígenes del alfabeto, la tipología de las inscripciones arcaicas y sobre todo, el carácter básicamente oral de la literatura griega hasta el siglo VI.El libro analiza el uso de la escritura en la Grecia arcaica entre 750 y 500 a.C. Tradicionalmente se considera que la obra de Homero fue consignada por escrito ca. 700 a.C. y que desde entonces se convirtió en referente cultural básico de los griegos. The present book considers events of the period that are crucial to our understanding of the reign and argues for a more balanced assessment of it. The focus lies on the impact of Oriental politics on the reign of Theophilos, the last iconoclast emperor. Entitled 'Book VI' by previous editors, the text follows upon Books I-IV and the Vita Basilii which recount the reigns of the emperors from AD 813 to the death of Basil I in 886. 'Book VI' then brings the text down to the advent of Nicephorus II Phokas in 963. Tellingly, the first two parts are composed in a classicising style typical of the literary circle of the emperor Constantine VII; but this third part, undertaken after Constantine's death - presumably on the initiative of the high official Basil the parakoimomenos, an ally of Phokas - presents a strange mixture of stylistic and linguistic levels which points to a team of authors, apparently working in the imperial palace and assuming different roles in expanding and polishing the sources. Compiled in apparent haste, this third text is based on continuations of the Logothete Chronicle with various revisions, such as additional sections of text or glosses - often inserted in the wrong places - which were presumably taken over from marginal notes or leaves inserted in the prototype, providing examples of Middle Byzantine methods of textual re-writing. \*\*\*Awarded with the 2025 SPBS Annual Book Prize by the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (SPBS).…
