In den WarenkorbAn attractive Gothic Revival item, tastefully printed in red and black. Printed on nine 13 x 9 cm panels, laid down on a cloth backing opening out to 39.5 x 28 cm; in original 14 x 10 cm printed card cover, with engraved title on front, within a gothic arch. In fair condition: aged and worn in worn and rubbed covers, with small…white circular label on front board. Arranged, appropriately enough, in four columns headed: Name of Style; Reign A.D.; Illustrative Examples; Characteristics. The seven styles are given as: Saxon; Norman; Transition or Semi-Norman; Early English or Lancet; Decorated; Perpendicular Florid or Plantagenet; and Debased. Uncommon: the only copies on COPAC at the British Library, Bodleian and Rylands, with the only other copy of any other edition a copy of the fifth edition of 1844 at York Minster. According to Bedford's entry in the Oxford DNB, such youthful illustrations of 'the ecclesiastical architecture of London and York' as this item are thought to have 'brought him to the attention of the celebrated publishers and lithographers Day & Sons, whose innovative and costly production techniques placed them at the forefront of printing technology. Bedford's role at Day & Sons was to transfer the drawings and designs of artists intended as illustrations directly on to the lithographic stone in preparation for printing, a procedure that was both exacting and highly regarded.'.

In den WarenkorbAn attractive collection of chromolithographs, suited to display. The plates are all in good condition, laid down on the aged and sometimes damaged leaves of a small 4to (17 x 21 cm) album with good tight bevelled-edged binding in dark brown cloth, on which an embossed stylized pattern of foliage and two storks is printed in bla…ck with the word 'ALBUM' on the front cover and blind-stamped on the back cover. The album has an ornate title page, printed in red, with illustration of flowers, branches and a butterfly, together with the word 'Album' and publishers' details. The firm's binder's ticket ('M. W. & CO. / LONDON', 'No. 6192) is at the foot of the rear pastedown. The 36 chromolithographs, each printed on 6.25 x 10.5 cm pieces of white card, are arranged side-by-side in pairs on the rectos of 18 leaves. 22 of the cards are captioned in black copperplate: 1 Adiantum Fern; 1 Birch; 2 Elm; 1 Horn Beam; 8 Maple; 3 Oak; 1 Pear & Plum; 1 Raspberry; 1 Red Maple; 1 Sassafras; 1 Wood-bine; 1 Whortlebury. In 1874 Marcus Ward & Co. produced a volume titled 'Plants: their natural growth and ornamental treatment', but the 44 leaves of plates do not correspond to the present collection. Colourful and effective illustrations of leaves with no background illustration, the white of the card nicely setting off the illustration. See Image.

In den WarenkorbA cultured man (an authority on numismatics), Fewster worked for the family firm of Thomas Fewster of Hull, paint, colour and varnish manufacturers. The present item is an attractive example of his professional interest in the developments in late nineteenth-century design (another is his collection of the designs of Christopher… Dresser, in two albums, is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London). It is a small 4to (21 x 17 cm) album of green cloth, with embossed design of birds and foliage around the words 'Scrap Album' on front cover, and printed illustrated title by Marcus Ward & Co. (The rear pastedown carries the firms ticket.) Both album and its contents are in very good condition, with light signs of age. Fewster's bookplate and library label are on front pastedown. The contents begin with four items which the context indicates are by Chas Goodall & Son. The first is a 12mo leaf carrying a full-page advertisement for 'Kiku' and 'Mume' Japanese paper, printed in silver on light blue, and with an oriental decorative border. This is followed by three leaves of white paper with oriental floral designs on one side, the first 35 x 11 cm (the first a stylised pattern printed in gold, and the second depicting small flowers on a long bough, printed in silver), and the third, 17.5 x 22.5 cm, in silver. The manuscript letter (2pp., landscape 12mo) follows, signed by 'Chas Goodall & Son'. Written in a neat, attractive hand, it begins: 'Dear Sir | We are very glad to reply to your enquiry respecting "Japanesque" stationery. As you are probably aware there is no nation which produces such an infinite variety of paper as the Japanese and they have hitherto stood alone in the use of a characteristically decorated paper for the purpose of communication one to another. The "Japanesque" stationery is based on a study of these Japanese papers many of which have a special symbolism and meaning, altogether independent of the correspondence for which they are the vehicle, and the peculiarity we have preserved, thus in the "Mume" & "Kiku" patterns congratulation and social joyousness are conveyed, hence these patterns are especially adapted for correspondence from friend to friend'. The letter continues with a discussion of the symbolism of the 'Bamboo' and 'Dead Willow' patterns. The letter is followed by an 11.5 x 8.5 cm card, laid down, with eight label designs in colour, each with birds and foliage surrounding a religious text ('BE ye followers of GOD', 'YE must be born again', 'NOW is the day of salvation' and so on). Next comes the laid-down title of 'Little Ella and the Fire King and other Fairy Tales | With Illustrations by Henry Warren' (Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1861), with its beautiful design printed in colours. This is followed by fourteen leaves from 'The Sermon on the Mount' ([London:] Longman & Co, 1844), 'Illuminated by Owen Jones', with each leaf tipped-in onto a leaf of the album by a strip of tissue tape, thus enabling examination of both sides. Jones's work is one of the high points of Victorian printing, and these examples (28pp. of the book's 32pp.) are taken from the unrevised first edition. The last item in the album is an 11.5 x 7.5 cm reversed print on India paper of Durer's 1512 depiction of a peasant man and woman at market.

In den WarenkorbThis is a document which would certainly repay investigation. No record of this firm of merchants has been discovered, or even of where they traded. Robison is a Scottish name, and there is an undated reference to a 'James Robison, merchant in Dumfries'; most Shuttleworth's hail from the north-east of England, and there is menti…on of a John Shuttleworth in Manchester in 1820. Other clues in the document suggest a London location: in 1793 Napper and Co. were listed as 'Dyers and Callico Printers, Old-street-square'; 'Clayton & Scott' were solicitors of Lincoln's Inn; and in 1810 a John Serrell dissolved his partnership with Charles Lickfold, 'as Carpenters and Builders, and Corn and Coal Dealers, at Camberwell in the County of Surrey'. On one side of a good piece of laid paper, 102 x 68 cm (i.e. three and a third feet by two). Folded six times into a 26 x 17 cm packet, on the front of which is written 'James Robinson Esqre.' In fair condition, with a number of closed tears along the folds (easily repairable, and with no loss of text whatever), and the reverse (the outside of the packet into which it is folded) rather grubby. The accountant William McRea has signed and dated the statement at bottom right. We at least know what the firm traded in: at bottom left are the details of the 'Merchandise': 'Coffee / Spice &c / Hops / Tea / Sugar'. The firm was clearly a substantial concern: the balance to 30 December 1804 was £17, 176 10s 4d. The rest of the document consists of the cash book, with the customary double-entry arrangement of credits and debits, and a list of the accounts of the drawers: William Bennett, James Bradley, Clayton & Scott, Henry Clarke, [Three pr. Cents,] John Hall, [Merchandise,] James Robinson, John Serrell, Thomas Reed, [Sundry Accounts,] John Shuttleworth Private Account, Napper & Co., Elizabeth Reed, [Lease & Fixtures,] Robison & Reed Goods Account, John Shuttleworth Goods Account, Joseph Reed Private Account'.
